How to Install the 161LR Loadbreak Elbow Connector
This guide outlines the essential steps for safely installing the 161LR Loadbreak Elbow Connector, covering cable preparation, component assembly, and grounding procedures for various UD cables.
Estimated time: 1h 30m
Tools needed:
Wire strippers, Wire brush, Crimp tool, Probe wrench, Hotstick tool
Supplies needed:
Elbow Connector Housing, Compression Lug, Probe, Lubricant (Do Not Substitute), Vinyl tape, Cold shrink tube (if applicable), Copper tape (if applicable), No. 14 AWG (2.5mm) copper ground wire, Appropriate neutral wire connector
- Prepare Cable for Connection
DANGER: Ensure all apparatus is de-energized before beginning installation. Inspect all package contents and components for damage and compatibility. Train the cable to ensure adequate slack. Depending on your cable type (non-jacketed concentric neutral, jacketed concentric neutral, jacketed with drain wires, or jacketed copper tape shield), follow the specific instructions in the product manual to unwrap/bind neutral/drain wires, cut the cable squarely, and remove the outer jacket and/or copper tape shield as specified in the documentation. If using a sealing kit, slide the cold shrink tube onto the cable.
- Prepare Conductor and Insulation
Remove the shield and insulation 2-1/8 inches (55mm) from the cable end, cutting squarely without nicking the conductor. Wire brush bare aluminum conductors and immediately install the compression lug, rotating to spread inhibitor. Align the lug's threaded hole with the bushing bore. Crimp the lug according to the crimp chart, starting at the crimp line mark and rotating 180 degrees for each successive crimp. Carefully wipe off excess inhibitor. Remove the insulation shield as shown in the diagram, and bevel the insulation end 1/8 inch (5mm) maximum. Thoroughly clean the insulation.
- Assemble Elbow Connector
Lubricate the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing with the supplied lubricant; do not substitute. Slide the elbow connector onto the cable using a back-and-forth twisting motion, then wipe off all excess lubricant. Align the elbow with the compression lug's threaded hole. Thread the probe into the lug by hand, ensuring it turns freely for approximately four turns before becoming snug. Tighten the probe with the supplied wrench until the wrench bends, indicating proper torque.
- Connect Grounding Wires
Insert one end of a separate No. 14 AWG (2.5mm) copper wire or equivalent through the grounding eye on the elbow and twist tightly, taking care not to damage the eye. Twist all neutral wires together and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector. Ensure adequate slack in the wires to allow for elbow operation. If using a cold shrink grounding kit, refer to its specific instructions to complete the grounding installation.
- Connect Elbow to Bushing Plug
DANGER: CONFIRM that both the transformer and the elbow are DE-ENERGIZED before proceeding. Lubricate the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing with the supplied lubricant. Securely fasten a hotstick tool to the loadbreak connector pulling eye. Insert the probe tip approximately 2 inches (50mm) into the bushing, then immediately push the elbow home with a fast, firm, straight motion, using sufficient force to engage the internal lock on the elbow connector and bushing interface. DO NOT OPERATE BY HAND.
