How to Install 161LR/162LR Loadbreak Elbow Connectors
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe installation and initial setup of 161LR and 162LR Loadbreak Elbow Connectors, including cable preparation, assembly, grounding, and connection to a mating bushing or accessory device.
Estimated time: 1h 30m
Tools needed:
Cable cutting tool, Cable stripping tools, Wire brush, Crimp tool (for compression lug), Probe wrench (supplied with kit), Hotstick tool (insulated live-line tool), Suitable sensing device (for capacitive test point, 162LR only)
Supplies needed:
161LR or 162LR Elbow Connector Kit (includes housing, compression lug, probe, lubricant), Copper wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm or equivalent), Appropriate connector for neutral wires, Silicone lubricant (for test point cap, 162LR only)
- Ensure Safety and Inspect Components
DANGER: All apparatus must be de-energized during installation or removal of parts. This product must be installed only by competent personnel trained in high voltage safety practices. Inspect all kit contents for completeness and damage. Check components for proper fit with the cable and mating products. Thread the probe into the compression lug by hand to check for resistance; replace if damaged.
- Prepare the Cable for Termination
Train the cable to ensure adequate slack for operation. Cut the cable squarely at the bushing centerline. Refer to your specific cable type (non-jacketed, jacketed concentric neutral, jacketed with drain wires, or jacketed copper tape shield) in the full instructions to remove the outer jacket and/or shield to the specified lengths. Remove 2-1/8” (55mm) of shield and insulation from the cable end, taking care not to nick the conductor. Wire brush bare aluminum conductors thoroughly.
- Install Compression Lug and Prepare Insulation
Immediately install the compression lug onto the wire-brushed conductor. Rotate the lug to spread the inhibitor. Position the lug so its contact threaded hole aligns with the bushing bore. Crimp the lug according to the manufacturer's chart, starting at the crimp line mark and rotating 180 degrees for each successive crimp. Carefully wipe off any excess inhibitor. Remove the insulation shield 6-7/8” (175mm) from the cable end. Bevel the insulation end a maximum of 1/8” (5mm). Thoroughly clean the insulation to remove all traces of dirt or inhibitor.
- Assemble the Elbow Connector Housing
Lubricate the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing with the supplied lubricant. DO NOT SUBSTITUTE. Slide the elbow connector onto the cable using a back-and-forth twisting motion. Wipe off all excess lubricant. Align the elbow with the compression lug’s threaded hole. Thread the probe into the lug by hand, ensuring it turns freely for approximately four turns before becoming snug. Tighten the probe with the supplied wrench until the wrench bends.
- Ground the Elbow and Neutral Wires
Insert one end of a separate copper wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm or equivalent) through the grounding eye on the elbow and twist tightly, being careful not to damage the eye. Twist all neutral wires together and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector. Ensure adequate slack in the wires for future elbow operation.
- Connect the Elbow to the Mating Bushing
DANGER: CONFIRM THAT THE TRANSFORMER AND ELBOW ARE DE-ENERGIZED before proceeding. Lubricate the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing with the supplied lubricant. Securely fasten a hotstick tool to the loadbreak connector pulling eye. Insert the probe tip approximately 2” (50mm) into the bushing, then immediately push the elbow home with a fast, firm, straight motion to engage the internal lock. DO NOT OPERATE BY HAND.
- Perform Voltage Test (162LR Only)
If using a 162LR connector with a test point, you can determine if the circuit is energized. Remove the test point cap with a hotstick, peeling it off at an angle. WARNING: The voltage test point is a capacitance device; do not use conventional voltage measuring equipment. Use a suitable sensing device made for capacitive test points and follow its manufacturer’s directions. Treat the elbow as energized until a 'no voltage' indication is confirmed by other means. After testing, clean the inside of the cap, lubricate with silicone lubricant, and replace it on the test point.
