How to Install the 15/25/35PCJ2WXXXX---RC Straight Joint
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for installing the 15/25/35PCJ2WXXXX---RC permanent, fully shielded, fully submersible straight joint for aluminum and/or copper conductor, wire shielded cables.
Estimated time: 2h
Tools needed:
Stripping guide, Circular cutting tool, Glass scraper, Hex wrench, Wirebrush, Crimping tool, Electrical tape, Wire strippers, Multimeter
Supplies needed:
Joint Housing, Splice (Conductor Contact), Cable Adapters, Lubricant, Retaining Collars, Hose Clamp, Electrical connector, #14 AWG copper wire, Heat shrink or cold shrink tubing, Bonding cable(s), Insulating tape, Sealing tape, Solder, CNW connectors
- Perform Initial Safety and Cable Preparation
DANGER: All apparatus must be de-energized during installation or removal of parts. Inspect all components for damage, rating, and compatibility. Using the stripping guide, carefully remove the cable jacket of both cables for a distance of 11-1/4” (285.7mm). Fold back shield wires and tape the end of wires on Cable 1 to the jacket, allowing extra length for rejoining. Clean the surface of the insulation shield, shield wires, and jacket for a distance of 30” (760mm). Slide the joint housing onto Cable 1 to a distance of 30” (760mm). If graphite coatings are present, remove them 12” (30.5cm) beyond the cable jacket cut using a circular cutting tool or by scraping with glass; avoid sanding.
- Prepare Cable Insulation
Using the stripping guide, carefully remove the insulation shield and cable insulation. DO NOT CUT OR NICK THE INSULATION, as this could result in failure. Wrap two turns of tape 1” (25mm) from the edge of the insulation shield as a marker on both cables. Clean the cable insulation, then lubricate it to provide a build-up or ramp of lubricant at the edge of the insulation shield.
- Install Cable Adapters and Retaining Collars
Take one cable adapter and lubricate the inside of both ends. Install the cable adapter until it meets the tape marker. Repeat this process for the other cable adapter. Select the retaining collar and partially thread the proper size setscrews. Position the retaining collar over the insulation and flush against the cable adapter. Using the supplied hex wrench, tighten each set screw only one or two turns at a time to keep the collar centered over the insulation. Continue to tighten the set screws until they are below the surface of the collar. Repeat for Cable 2.
- Install the Splice
Thoroughly clean the end of the cable adapters and the cable where shown. Install the hose clamp around the adapter on the opposite side of the splice from where the housing is stored, to hold the adapter in place during final assembly. Tape over the hose clamp to form a smooth surface. Wirebrush the exposed conductors of both cables and immediately insert them into the splice. Ensure the “Check” dimension does not exceed 8-1/2” (215mm); if it does, redo the assembly. Crimp the splice following the recommendations provided with it. Wipe off all excess inhibitor, then check the distance between the cable adapters. If it exceeds 8-3/4” (222mm), redo the assembly. Clean and lubricate the outside surface of the cable adapters before sliding the housing into its final position.
- Complete Joint Assembly and Grounding
Slide the housing into its final position, centering it over the cable adapters. Remove all tape; cable and adapter insulation must not be exposed after positioning the joint. Reshape the shield wires and secure them to the ends of the joint as shown. Insert one of the shield wires from Cable 1 (if #14 AWG or larger) through the joint grounding eye. Repeat for Cable 2. If shield wires are smaller than #14 AWG, use separate #14 AWG copper wire or equivalent. Connect the joint grounding wires and remaining shield wires using an appropriate connector. Reconstruct the cable jacket (where applicable) over both cables and also over the joint housing using heat or cold shrink materials (not included in the kit).
