Special Features
Power Cable Joints utilize permanently crimped connectors. PCJ housings are fully insulated, shielded and sealed for direct-burial, vault, submersible and other servere service applications. Units have been designed and tested per IEEE Standard 404 to ensure system matched performance and ratings equal to the cable to which the splice will be installed. Power Cable Joints are available in two styles. Style 1 uses a single-piece housing that is sized to accommodate a specific range of cable - ideally suited to straight splicing of the same or similar cable. Style 2 designs incorporate a universal housing with separate cable adapters to allow transition splices of different types and sizes of cable

How to Install the 15/25/35PCJ2WXXXX-RC Straight Joint

This guide provides detailed instructions for the safe and proper installation of the 15/25/35PCJ2WXXXX-RC permanent, fully shielded, fully submersible straight joint for aluminum and/or copper conductor cables.

Estimated time: 1h 30m

Tools needed:

Stripping guide, Circular cutting tool or glass scraper, Wirebrush, Hex wrench, Crimping tool

Supplies needed:

Joint Housing, Splice (Conductor Contact), Cable Adapters, Lubricant, Retaining Collars (2), Hose Clamp, Electrical Tape, Connector (for grounding wires, user supplied), #14 AWG copper wire (if needed for grounding), Cable jacket reconstruction material (user supplied, e.g., heat/cold shrink)

  1. Ensure Safety and Inspect Components

DANGER: All apparatus must be de-energized during installation or removal of parts. Do not touch or move energized products in the work area. This product must be installed only by competent personnel trained in good safety practices involving high voltage electrical equipment. Failure to follow these instructions will result in damage to the product and serious or fatal injury. Check package contents against the component list for completeness and damage. Verify all components fit properly with the cable and/or mating products. Read the entire installation instructions before starting.

  2. Prepare Work Area and Cable Ends

Have all required tools at hand and maintain cleanliness throughout the procedure. Examine the mating cable ends, ensuring both cables are free from moisture and other contaminants. If strand filled or water-blocking material is present in conductors, contact the cable manufacturer for their procedures and/or recommendations on welding and/or crimping the conductor.

  3. Remove Graphite Coating and Prepare Cable Jacket

Remove graphite coatings 12 inches (30.5cm) beyond the cable jacket cut using a circular cutting tool or by scraping with glass; avoid sanding. Using the stripping guide, carefully remove the cable jacket (when applicable) of both cables for a distance of 11-1/4 inches (285.7mm).

  4. Fold Shield Wires and Position Housing

Fold back shield wires and tape the end of wires on Cable 1 to the jacket, allowing enough extra length of wire to later rejoin over the joint. Clean the surface of the insulation shield, shield wires, and jacket for a distance of 30 inches (760mm). Slide the joint housing onto Cable 1 to a distance of 30 inches (760mm).

  5. Remove Insulation Shield and Cable Insulation

Using the stripping guide, carefully remove the insulation shield and cable insulation. CAUTION: DO NOT CUT OR NICK THE INSULATION. This could result in failure of the assembly.

  6. Mark and Lubricate Cable Insulation

Wrap two turns of tape 1 inch (25mm) from the edge of the insulation shield as a marker on both cables. Clean the cable insulation, then lubricate it to provide a build-up or ramp of lubricant at the edge of the insulation shield.

  7. Install Cable Adapters

Take one cable adapter and lubricate the inside of both ends. Install this cable adapter onto Cable 1 until it meets the tape marker as shown. Repeat the lubrication and installation process for the other cable adapter onto Cable 2.

  8. Install Retaining Collars

Select a retaining collar and partially thread the proper size setscrews (refer to instructions packaged with the collars). Position the retaining collar over the insulation and flush against the cable adapter on Cable 1. Using the supplied hex wrench, tighten each set screw only one or two turns at a time to keep the collar centered over the insulation. Continue tightening until the set screws are below the surface of the collar. Repeat this process for Cable 2.

  9. Prepare for Splice Installation

Thoroughly clean the end of the cable adapters and the cable where shown. Install a hose clamp around the adapter on the opposite side of the splice from where the housing is stored, as shown, to hold the adapter in place during final assembly. Tape over the hose clamp to form a smooth surface.

  10. Insert and Crimp Conductors

Wirebrush the exposed conductors of both cables and immediately insert them into the splice. Be sure the 'Check' dimension does not exceed 8-1/2 inches (215mm); otherwise, redo the assembly. Crimp the splice following the recommendations provided with it.

  11. Verify Splice and Lubricate Adapters

Wipe off all excess inhibitor. Check the distance between cable adapters; if it exceeds 8-3/4 inches (222mm), redo the assembly. Clean and lubricate the outside surface of the cable adapters before sliding the housing into its final position.

  12. Complete Joint Assembly

Slide the housing into its final position, centering it over the cable adapters. Remove all tape. Cable and adapter insulation must not be exposed after positioning the joint. Reshape the shield wires and secure them to the ends of the joint as shown.

  13. Connect Grounding Wires and Reconstruct Jacket

Insert one of the shield wires from Cable 1 (if #14 AWG or larger) through the joint grounding eye. Repeat for Cable 2. If shield wires are smaller than #14 AWG, use a separate #14 AWG copper wire or equivalent. Connect the joint grounding wires and remaining shield wires using an appropriate user-supplied connector, as shown. Reconstruct the cable jacket (where applicable) over both cables and also over the joint housing using suitable material (e.g., heat/cold shrink, NOT included).
