This guide provides step-by-step instructions for preparing and installing STX075-466PVC Star Teck™ PVC cable fittings, including cable preparation and the application of either liquid (SC4-KIT-1) or putty (SC65) sealing compound.
Estimated time: 1h 30m
Tools needed:
Hacksaw, Strap wrenches, Suitable wooden dowel, Gloves, Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), Damp cloth
Supplies needed:
STX075-466PVC Star Teck™ PVC cable fitting, Cable, SC4-KIT-1 LIQUID SEALANT (if chosen), SC65 PUTTY SEALANT (if chosen), Lubricant, Fiber damming material (if using liquid sealant)
- Ensure Electrical Safety
WARNING: Risk of electrical shock. Before installing or performing maintenance, verify that all circuits are de-energized. This product must be installed by a qualified electrician in accordance with national and local electrical codes.
- Prepare Cable for Fitting
Determine the required conductor length inside the enclosure. Remove the outer jacket to expose the armor, then cut the armor with a hacksaw. CAUTION: Do not nick or cut conductor insulation. Trim the outer jacket to the strip length specified in the product table for your specific STX fitting (e.g., 0.725-0.905 inches for STX075-466PVC).
- Adjust Cable Boot
Unscrew the gland nut from the body. Force the square-cut cable into the boot and cut the boot in front of the cable (Method 1). Alternatively, strip the cable jacket off the armor and progressively cut slices off the boot until it snugly slides onto the armor (Method 2).
- Assemble Gland Nut and Cable
Feed the prepared cable through the gland nut opening and push until the cable armor hits the end stop. Apply lubricant where indicated. Tighten the gland nut to the maximum torque specified in the product table (e.g., 8 in-lbs for STX075-466PVC). Ensure the bushing seals evenly and the cable remains centered for an optimal seal.
- Disassemble for Sealing
Disassemble the hub from the body sub-assembly by loosening the union. Unscrew the sealing chamber from the body sub-assembly.
- Prepare Conductors
For power cables, trim the inner jacket to 1/8"-3/8" to expose the conductor bundle. For shielded data cables, trim the inner jacket to 1/8"-3/8" to expose the shielded conductor bundle, then carefully remove the outer (overall) shield and filler materials, taking care not to nick or damage inner shields or conductors.
- Apply Liquid Sealing Compound (SC4-KIT-1) - Optional
If using SC4-KIT-1, pack fiber damming material tightly into all voids between conductors and body, spreading uninsulated grounding conductor strands if applicable. Screw the sealing chamber back onto the body subassembly until it completely seats. Position the cable/fitting vertically. Mix the compound per package instructions. For STX075-466PVC, fill the sealing chamber to the top. CAUTION: Remove all excess compound from outside the chamber with a damp cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners. Wait approximately 1 hour for solidification.
- Apply Putty Sealing Compound (SC65) - Optional
If using SC65 (not for shielded cables or 5+ conductors), WARNING: Wear gloves and proper PPE. Mix the two parts of the compound thoroughly until uniform blue. CAUTION: Install at 70°F (21°C) or above. Apply compound between conductors and around them to form a plug. Slide the sealing chamber onto the cable and compound, then screw it to the body sub-assembly. Remove any excess compound. Fill the throat area with compound, packing tightly with a wooden dowel. CAUTION: Remove all excess compound from outside the chamber with a damp cloth. Allow compound to set for approximately one hour before disturbing conductors.
- Mount and Secure Assembly
Mount the hub in the desired location. Once the sealing compound is solidified (after approximately 1 hour for either method), place the encapsulated assembly into the hub and secure it by tightening the union until it bottoms (metal to metal contact).
