This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the proper installation of Star Teck™ PVC cable fittings, ensuring a secure and sealed connection for armored cables in accordance with national and local electrical codes.
Estimated time: 15m
Tools needed:
Hacksaw, Wire strippers, Strap wrenches, Utility knife
Supplies needed:
Star Teck™ PVC Cable Fitting (e.g., ST075-468SPVC), Armored cable, Wire pulling lubricant (optional)
- Disconnect Power and Select Fitting
WARNING: Disconnect all power to the circuit before beginning installation to prevent risk of electrical shock. Choose the appropriate Star Teck™ PVC cable fitting that matches the enclosure and the specific armored cable being used. Refer to the product assembly and table for compatibility. This product must be installed by a qualified electrician.
- Prepare the Armored Cable
Determine the required working length of the cable. Carefully remove a portion of the outer jacket to expose the cable armor. Using a hacksaw, cut the armor to the specified strip length as indicated in the product table (Figures 1 and 2). Trim the outer jacket to adjust the exposed armor strip length accordingly.
- Prepare the Cable Boot
Determine where to cut the cable boot. You can either unscrew the gland nut from the body, force the square-cut cable into the boot, and then cut the boot in front of the cable (Method 1, Figure 3A). Alternatively, strip the cable jacket off the armor and progressively cut slices off the boot until the opening can snugly slide onto the armor (Method 2, Figure 3B). CAUTION: Do not over strip the boot; there should be no gaps between the boot and the cable jacket.
- Insert Cable into Gland Nut
Feed the prepared cable through the opening of the gland nut. Push the cable until its armor firmly hits the internal end stop of the fitting (Figure 4). The use of wire pulling lubricant (cat. number 15-236) will allow for easier installation.
- Tighten the Gland Nut for Seal
Using strap wrenches only (as PVC coated fittings require), tighten the gland nut until an appropriate seal is achieved or to the maximum torque specified in the product table (see step 5 in document). Ensure the bushing seals evenly around the cable’s outer jacket and that the cable remains centered within the fitting to obtain an optimal seal (Figure 5).
