How to Install the STX075-465PVC Cable Fitting for Shielded Cables

This guide provides detailed instructions for installing the STX075-465PVC Star Teck™ PVC cable fitting specifically for shielded data cables, including cable preparation, fitting assembly, and sealing with SC4-KIT-1 liquid compound.

Estimated time: 1h 30m

Tools needed:

Hacksaw, Strap wrenches, Wire strippers, Gloves

Supplies needed:

STX075-465PVC Cable Fitting, SC4-KIT-1 LIQUID SEALANT, Fiber damming material, Lubricant, Damp cloth, Shielded data cable, Proper PPE

  1. De-energize Circuits and Prepare for Installation

WARNING: Risk of electrical shock. Before installing or performing maintenance, verify that all circuits are de-energized. Ensure installation is performed by a qualified electrician in accordance with national and local electrical codes. Gather all required tools and supplies, including the appropriate SC4-KIT-1 liquid sealing compound for hazardous locations.

  2. Prepare the Cable Armor and Outer Jacket

Determine the working length of conductors required inside the enclosure. Remove a portion of the outer jacket to expose the cable armor. Cut the exposed armor using a hacksaw. CAUTION: Do not nick or cut the conductor insulation. Trim the outer jacket to expose the armor strip length as indicated in the product table (0.617-0.805 inches for STX075-465PVC).

  3. Prepare Shielded Data Cable Conductors

Trim the inner jacket to a length of 1/8”-3/8” to expose the shielded conductor bundle. Remove the outer (overall) shield from the conductor bundle, taking care not to nick or damage the inner shields. Remove any filler materials, ensuring not to disturb or damage inner shields.

  4. Prepare the Cable Boot

Unscrew the gland nut from the fitting body. Choose one method to prepare the cable boot: Method 1: Force the square-cut cable into the boot, then cut the boot in front of the cable end. Method 2: Strip the cable jacket off the armor, then progressively cut slices off the boot until the opening can snugly slide onto the armor. Apply lubricant where indicated prior to screwing the gland nut.

  5. Insert Cable and Secure Gland Nut

Feed the prepared cable through the gland nut opening. Push the cable until the cable armor hits the end stop inside the fitting. Tighten the gland nut using strap wrenches until an appropriate seal is obtained or to the maximum torque of 600 in-lbs for STX075-465PVC. Ensure the bushing seals evenly around the cable’s outer jacket and the cable remains centered for an optimal seal.

  6. Disassemble for Sealing Compound Application

Disassemble the hub from the body sub-assembly by loosening the union. Unscrew the sealing chamber from the body sub-assembly.

  7. Pack Fiber Damming Material and Reassemble Sealing Chamber

Pack the fiber damming material tightly into all voids between the conductors and the body. Spread the strands of any uninsulated grounding conductor, if applicable. Screw the sealing chamber back onto the body subassembly until it completely seats on the body.

  8. Mix and Pour Liquid Sealing Compound

Position the cable and fitting into a vertical orientation. Mix the SC4-KIT-1 liquid sealing compound according to the instructions provided on its package. Dispense the mixed sealing compound into the end of the sealing chamber until the level of compound stabilizes and fills to the top (for STX075-465PVC). CAUTION: Immediately remove all excess compound material from the outside of the sealing chamber with a damp cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners such as powder cleaners, sandpaper, steel wool, or wire brush that may damage the flame path.

  9. Mount Hub and Finalize Assembly

Allow the sealing compound to solidify for approximately 1 hour. Mount the hub in the desired location. Place the encapsulated assembly into the hub and secure it in position by tightening the union until it bottoms (metal to metal contact).
