How to Install the 15kV Ranger 2 Silicone Rubber Termination (Tape Shielded Cable)
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for installing the R2IT15M2-N0310 15kV Ranger 2 Shrink fit Silicone Rubber Termination on tape shielded cables for indoor applications.
Estimated time: 1h 30m
Tools needed:
Cable cutter, Crimping tool, Deburring tool/knife, Solvent, Cleaning pads, Aluminum oxide abrasive (120 grit or finer)
Supplies needed:
R2IT15M2-N0310 Termination Kit, Vinyl tape, Copper foil tape, Silicone lubricant/grease, Terminal lug/connector, Gloves, Semi-conductive rubber tape (e.g., Scotcht No. 13, if needed)
- De-energize Apparatus and Inspect Kit
WARNING: All apparatus must be de-energized during installation or removal. Do not touch or move energized products. Inspect the kit contents to ensure they are complete, undamaged, and compatible with the cable and mating parts. Read all instructions before starting.
- Prepare Cable for Termination
Verify the cable size fits the termination selection chart. Train the cable into position and cut it to the required length. Prepare the cable according to the specified dimensions: 9-1/4” (235mm) jacket removal length, 1-1/2” (38mm) for terminal lug depth plus growth allowance, and 3/4” (19mm) tape shield. Secure the tape shield edge with a single wrap of the supplied copper foil tape to prevent unrolling.
- Install Ground Braid and Markers
Wrap one band of vinyl tape 1/4” (6mm) from the cable jacket end as a marker. Position the preformed ground braid with its short tail over the tape shield and the solder block centered over this vinyl tape. Secure the ground braid to the cable jacket with vinyl tape. Apply a second vinyl tape band directly over the first marker and solder block, maintaining the 1/4” (6mm) dimension.
- Secure Ground Braid with Constant Force Spring
Wrap the ground braid around the cable tape shield for one complete wrap, trim any excess to prevent overlap, and secure it in place with the constant force spring. Wrap the spring in the same direction as the ground braid, cinching it after the final winding. Secure the spring with two wraps of vinyl tape. For cloth or paper semi-conductive shields, overwrap with one half-lapped layer of highly stretched semi-conductive rubber tape (e.g., Scotcht No. 13).
- Install and Crimp Lug or Connector
Ensure the termination assembly fits over the selected lug. If not, clean the insulation and slide the termination onto the cable before installing the lug (do not remove the core yet). Position the connector/lug and crimp it according to the manufacturer’s directions, leaving the last 3/8” to 1/2” uncrimped. Remove excess oxide inhibitor and all sharp crimp flashings/edges.
- Clean Cable Insulation and Lug Barrel
Wipe the cable insulation with solvent-saturated pads, ensuring solvent does not touch the semi-conductive insulation shield. If abrasive cleaning is necessary, use only aluminum oxide abrasive (120 grit or finer) on the insulation only. Do not use abrasive on the semi-conductive insulation shield, and avoid reducing the cable insulation diameter.
- Install Silicone Rubber Termination Body
Liberally coat the edge of the semi-conductive insulation shield with silicone grease to fill the step at the semi-con cut-off. Slide the termination body onto the cable, aligning its edge with the forward edge of the vinyl tape marker. Carefully begin to remove the core by pulling counter-clockwise. Recheck the termination position and continue removing the core, avoiding pushing or pulling on the assembly.
- Connect Ground Braid to System Ground
Connect the installed ground braid securely to the system ground.
