How to Install the R2T15/28M Ranger 2 Silicone Rubber Termination for Tape Shielded Cables
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe and proper installation of the R2T15/28M Ranger 2 Shrink fit Silicone Rubber Termination on tape shielded cables, including cable preparation, ground braid installation, and termination placement.
Estimated time: 1h 30m
Tools needed:
Crimping tool, Wire strippers, Measuring tape, Utility knife
Supplies needed:
R2T15/28M Silicone Rubber Termination kit, Silicone Lubricant, Gray Silicone Rubber Electrical Tape, Constant Force Spring, Preformed Ground Braid, Sealing Mastic, Copper Foil Tape, Gloves, Vinyl Tape, Approved Solvent, Aluminum Oxide Abrasive (optional), Terminal Lug or Connector
- Prepare the Cable
DANGER: Ensure all apparatus is de-energized before starting. Verify the cable size is compatible with the termination kit using the selection chart. Train the cable into its final position and cut it to the required length, accounting for the terminal lug depth and any growth allowance for aluminum lugs. Remove the cable jacket and tape shield according to the specified dimensions, securing the tape shield edge with a single wrap of copper foil tape.
- Install the Ground Braid
Apply one band of sealing mastic around the cable jacket, 1/4 inch (6mm) from the jacket end, stretching it to 50%. Position the preformed ground braid with its short tail over the tape shield and the solder block centered on the mastic. Secure the ground braid to the cable jacket with vinyl tape and press the solder block into the mastic. Apply a second mastic band over the solder block and the first mastic, then wrap two half-lapped layers of vinyl tape over the mastic seal. Wrap the ground braid once around the cable tape shield, trim any excess, and secure it with the constant force spring, wrapping the spring in the same direction as the braid. Cinch the spring tightly and secure it with two wraps of vinyl tape.
- Install the Terminal Lug or Connector
Verify that the termination assembly can fit over your chosen terminal lug or connector. If it cannot, slide the termination body onto the cable before installing the lug, ensuring the removable core remains in place. Position the lug or connector and crimp it according to the manufacturer's instructions, leaving the last 3/8 to 1/2 inch uncrimped. After crimping, remove any excess oxide inhibitor and all sharp crimp flashings or edges.
- Clean Cable Insulation and Lug
Clean the cable insulation thoroughly using an approved solvent and pads, taking care not to let the solvent contact the semi-conductive insulation shield. If necessary, use only 120-grit or finer aluminum oxide abrasive on the insulation, avoiding the semi-conductive shield and ensuring the cable insulation diameter is not reduced.
- Install the Termination Body
Create a track-resistant moisture seal by wrapping gray silicone rubber electrical tape around the base of the terminal lug. If the lug barrel diameter is smaller than the cable's primary insulation, build up the tape to match the insulation diameter. Apply a liberal coating of silicone grease to the edge of the semi-conductive insulation shield to fill the step. Pull the loose end of the removable core through the top of the termination until it is flush with the bottom. Slide the termination body onto the cable, aligning it with the forward edge of the mastic seal. Carefully remove the core by unwinding it counter-clockwise, ensuring the termination body remains butted against the mastic seal. Do not push or pull the termination during core removal.
- Seal and Finalize Termination
Apply a thin film of silicone lubricant to the termination skirt and mastic seal area, avoiding the skirt tabs. Carefully fold down the skirt over the mastic seal. Complete the lug area moisture seal using the remaining gray silicone rubber electrical tape, overlapping the termination insulator by approximately 1 inch and extending it over a non-crimped region of the lug/connector barrel with a half-lap configuration. Finally, connect the ground braid to the system ground and confirm that the High-K step does not exceed 1.5 inches.
