Overview

The ABB Ranger2 15KV Indoor Cable Termination (SKU: R2IT15M1N2300) delivers reliable, high-performance termination for medium-voltage power cables in indoor electrical infrastructure. Designed to meet IEEE 48 standards, this termination supports tape shield, wire shield, and unshielded cable types with insulation diameters from 0.64 to 1.12 inches (16 mm to 53 mm). The integrated copper lug features a 2-hole spade configuration, compatible with stranded or compressed conductors from #2 AWG up to 1250 kcmil, as well as solid conductors from 400 kcmil to 1250 kcmil. Key specifications include a maximum design voltage to ground of 9.5 kV, a coronal extinction voltage of ≤3pC at 13 kV, and a lightning impulse withstand rating of 110 kV crest. The termination withstands 1-minute dry 60Hz voltage of 50 kV, 5-hour dry 60Hz voltage of 35 kV, and 15-minute DC withstand of 75 kV. Its non-tracking silicone housing ensures superior memory and weathering resistance, while the shrink-fit design simplifies installation with common cable preparation dimensions. The Ranger2 series is engineered for long-term service in indoor conditions, accommodating ambient temperatures from -22°F to +149°F (-30°C to +65°C) and altitudes up to 3300 feet (1005 m). It installs in restricted spaces and supports free-hanging applications or optional mounting brackets. Optional insulating silicone sleeves provide additional creepage distance and wildlife protection. Three sizes cover the entire cable range, making it a versatile solution for medium-voltage power distribution in industrial and commercial settings.

How to Install the 15kV Ranger 2 Silicone Rubber Termination for Tape Shielded Cables

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for installing the R2IT15M1N2300 15kV Ranger 2 Shrink fit Silicone Rubber Termination on tape shielded cables for indoor applications. It covers cable preparation, ground braid installation, lug connection, cleaning, and termination placement.

Estimated time: 1h 30m

Tools needed:

Crimping tool, Wire strippers, Measuring tape, Abrasive (aluminum oxide, grit 120 or finer)

Supplies needed:

R2IT15M1N2300 Silicone Rubber Termination Kit, Preformed Ground Braid, Constant Force Spring, Silicone Lubricant, Copper Foil Tape, Gloves, Terminal Lug/Connector, Vinyl Tape, Solvent, Abrasive pads (if needed)

  1. Prepare the Cable for Termination

WARNING: All apparatus must be de-energized during installation or removal of parts. Do not touch or move energized products in the work area. Check the cable size against the termination chart. Train the cable into position and cut it to the required length. Prepare the cable according to the specified dimensions (Jacket Removal Length 9-1/4” (235mm), Semi-Con 3/4” (19mm)), allowing for terminal lug depth and aluminum lug growth. Secure the tape shield edge with a single wrap of the supplied copper foil tape to prevent unrolling.

  2. Install the Ground Braid

Wrap one band of vinyl tape 1/4” (6mm) from the cable jacket end. Position the preformed ground braid with its short tail over the tape shield and the solder block centered over the vinyl tape marker. Secure the ground braid to the cable jacket with vinyl tape. Apply a second vinyl tape band directly over the original marker and ground braid solder block, maintaining the 1/4” (6mm) dimension. Wrap the ground braid around the cable tape shield once, trim any excess, and secure it in place with the constant force spring, wrapping in the same direction. Cinch the spring after the final winding and secure it with two wraps of vinyl tape.

  3. Install the Terminal Lug or Connector

Verify that the termination assembly will fit over the selected lug. If not, slide the termination onto the cable before installing the lug (do not remove the core yet). Position the connector or lug and crimp it according to the manufacturer's instructions, ensuring not to crimp the last 3/8” to 1/2” of the connector. After crimping, remove any excess oxide inhibitor and all sharp crimp flashings or edges.

  4. Clean the Cable Insulation and Lug Barrel

Wipe the cable insulation thoroughly with solvent-saturated pads. Exercise caution to prevent the solvent from touching the semi-conductive insulation shield. If abrasive cleaning is necessary, use only aluminum oxide abrasive (grit 120 or finer) on the insulation, avoiding the semi-conductive shield. Ensure that the cable insulation diameter is not reduced below the kit's specifications.

  5. Install the Silicone Rubber Termination Body

Apply a liberal coating of silicone grease over the edge of the semi-conductive insulation shield to fill the step at the semi-con cut-off. Carefully slide the termination body onto the cable, aligning its edge with the forward edge of the vinyl tape marker. Begin to remove the core slowly, rechecking the termination's position as you proceed. Continue removing the core completely, ensuring not to push or pull on the termination assembly during this process. Finally, connect the ground braid securely to the system ground.
