How to Install 15kV Ranger 2 Shrink-Fit Silicone Rubber Termination (Indoor)

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for installing the 15kV Ranger 2 Shrink-Fit Silicone Rubber Termination with High-K Stress Relief on tape-shielded cables for indoor applications. It covers cable preparation, ground braid installation, lug connection, cleaning, and termination installation. Ensure all apparatus is de-energized before starting.

Estimated time: 1h 30m

Tools needed:

Cable preparation tools (e.g., utility knife, wire strippers), Crimping tool, Solvent saturated pads, Aluminum oxide abrasive (grit 120 or finer, optional), Measuring tape or ruler

Supplies needed:

15kV Ranger 2 Shrink-Fit Silicone Rubber Termination kit, Preformed Ground Braid, Constant Force Spring, Silicone Lubricant (grease), Copper Foil Tape, Gloves, Vinyl Tape, Terminal lug or connector, System ground connection materials

  1. Prepare Cable

DANGER: Ensure all apparatus is de-energized before starting installation. Check the cable size against the Termination Selection Chart on Page 1 of the instructions. Train the cable into position and cut it to the required length. Prepare the cable using the dimensions: Jacket Removal Length 9-1/4”(235mm), Semi-Con 1-1/2“(38mm), Tape Shield 3/4”(19mm). Allow for the depth of the terminal lug and additional exposed conductor distance for aluminum lug growth (1/4” to 3/4” depending on size). Prevent the tape shield from unrolling by holding down its edge with a single wrap of the supplied copper foil tape.

  2. Install Ground Braid

Carefully wrap one band of vinyl tape around the cable jacket 1/4” (6mm) from the jacket end; this tape serves as a marker. Position the preformed ground braid with its short tail over the tape shield and the solder block centered over the vinyl tape strip. Secure the ground braid to the cable jacket using vinyl tape. Apply a second vinyl tape band directly over the original tape marker and ground braid solder block, maintaining the 1/4” (6mm) dimension. Wrap the ground braid around the cable tape shield one complete wrap, trim any excess to prevent overlap, and secure it in place with the constant force spring. Wrap the spring in the same direction as the ground braid. Cinch (tighten) the spring after wrapping the final winding, then secure the spring with two wraps of vinyl tape.

  3. Install Lug or Connector

Before proceeding, check to ensure the termination assembly fits over your selected lug. If the lug will not fit through the termination core, clean the insulation and slide the termination onto the cable before installing the lug (do not remove the core at this time). Position the connector or lug and crimp it according to the manufacturer’s directions. Do not crimp the last 3/8” to 1/2” of the connector. After crimping, remove any excess oxide inhibitor and all sharp crimp flashings or edges.

  4. Clean Cable Insulation and Lug Barrel

Wipe the cable insulation with solvent saturated pads, being careful not to allow the solvent to touch the semi-con insulation shield. If abrasive must be used, apply it only on the insulation and not on the semi-con insulation shield. Use only aluminum oxide abrasive, grit 120 or finer. Exercise caution to avoid reducing the cable insulation diameter below the limits allowed by the kit.

  5. Install Termination

Cover the edge of the semi-con insulation shield with a liberal coating of silicone grease; this silicone will fill the step at the semi-con cut-off. Slide the termination body onto the cable and align its edge with the forward edge of the vinyl tape marker. Carefully begin to remove the core by pulling counter-clockwise. Recheck the termination position and continue to remove the core. Do not push or pull on the termination assembly while removing the core. Finally, connect the ground braid to the system ground.
