How to Install the 600/900 Series Deadbreak Connecting Plug
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe installation and connection of the 600/900 Series Deadbreak Connecting Plug with compatible mating devices, emphasizing high-voltage safety practices.
Estimated time: 45m
Tools needed:
Torque wrench, 3/8" hex bit socket, 600ATM (torque wrench adapter)
Supplies needed:
600/900 Series Deadbreak Connecting Plug, Lubricant (supplied with plug, DO NOT SUBSTITUTE), Mating plug device (e.g., elbow, bushing extender, vault stretcher, or elbow end module), Stud (if not pre-installed in mating device), No. 14 AWG (2.5mm) copper wire (or equivalent, for grounding)
- Perform Safety Checks and Inspect Parts
Before beginning, ensure all apparatus are de-energized. This product must only be installed by competent personnel trained in high voltage electrical safety practices. Inspect all parts, including the connecting plug and mating device, for any damage, proper rating, and compatibility. If the product came with protective shipping covers, remove them and replace with appropriate HV insulated caps or connectors before energizing or submerging the circuit.
- Install the Stud (if required)
If the mating plug device (such as an elbow, bushing extender, vault stretcher, or elbow end module) is not equipped with a stud, hand tighten the supplied stud into the mating plug device. Ensure the stud is threaded in until the start of the flats are below the contact surface.
- Clean and Lubricate Components
Thoroughly clean both the connecting plug and its mating part. Apply the supplied lubricant to the connecting plug, the stud, and the mating part as indicated in the instructions. It is critical to use ONLY the supplied lubricant; do not substitute, as other lubricants may harm the product. Keep all surfaces clean during this process.
- Connect and Torque the Plug
Push the connecting plug firmly into the mating part (elbow, bushing extender, vault stretcher, or elbow end module) until the threads engage. Ensure the contact of the connecting plug is held against the contact surface of the mating part. Using a torque wrench equipped with a 600ATM or a 3/8” hex bit socket, tighten the connection to a torque of 50 to 60 foot-pounds (68 to 81 newton-meters).
- Install Additional Components (if applicable)
If your installation requires additional components like an elbow, bushing extender, or vault stretcher, refer to the specific installation instructions provided with those products to continue the assembly.
- Ground the Connecting Plug (if applicable)
If grounding is required, insert one end of a No. 14 AWG (2.5mm) copper wire (or equivalent) through the grounding eye on the connecting plug. Twist the wire tightly, taking care not to damage the eye. Securely connect the other end of the wire to an appropriate ground.
