How to Install the ELASTIMOLD LINK-C Deadbreak Cam Link Operable Connector System
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe installation and setup of the ELASTIMOLD LINK-C 600 amp deadbreak cam link operable connector system, including mounting, wiring, and component assembly.
Estimated time: 2h
Tools needed:
Socket wrench (for 1 inch hex), Torque wrench, Hot stick, 600ATM Operating Tool, 600AMT Operating Tool, Welding equipment (if mounting stand-off plug)
Supplies needed:
ELASTIMOLD supplied lubricant, 600 amp elbow (pre-installed on cable), 3/8-16 x 2 inch studs (3, if mounting stand-off plug), Hex nuts (6), Lockwashers (3), Spacers (3, optional), Alignment bracket clamp hardware, #14 AWG or #12 AWG solid copper wire, Appropriate grounding connectors, Desired 200 amp mating product
- Prepare for Installation and Ensure Safety
Before beginning, ensure all apparatus is de-energized. Inspect all parts for damage, proper rating, and compatibility with mating components. This product must be installed only by competent personnel trained in high voltage electrical equipment safety practices. Failure to follow these instructions can result in serious injury or product damage. Remove any protective shipping covers and replace with appropriate HV insulated caps or connectors before energizing or submerging.
- Install the 600 Amp Elbow onto the Cable
Install the 600 amp elbow onto the cable according to the specific installation instructions provided with the elbow. Ensure the elbow is positioned to align correctly with the stand-off plug.
- Mount the Stand-Off Plug (If Applicable)
If required, weld three 3/8-16 x 2 inch studs to the faceplate according to customer standard practice and specified dimensions. Install three hex nuts onto the studs to support the stand-off plug, ensuring it aligns with the bushing. Place the stand-off plug over the studs, resting on the nuts or optional spacers. Secure the stand-off plug by installing a lockwasher and hex nut on each stud, then tighten to 12 ft-lbs torque. Verify that the top surfaces of the bushing and stand-off plug are in-line, adjusting nuts as needed.
- Install the Bushing Extender and Elbow Components
Clean and thoroughly lubricate the apparatus bushing and both interfaces of the 600 amp bushing extender with ELASTIMOLD lubricant. Install the bushing extender onto the apparatus bushing. Insert the 600ATM into the retainer contact, engage its internal hex broach, then insert the retainer contact into the bushing extender. Thread it into the apparatus bushing using a suitable tool on the 1 inch hex of the 600ATM, torquing to 50-60 ft-lbs. Repeat the cleaning and lubrication process for the epoxy standoff plug and both interfaces of the 600 amp elbow. Install the elbow onto the epoxy standoff plug. Insert the 600AMT into the retainer contact, engage its internal hex broach, then insert the retainer contact into the elbow through the compression lug hole. Thread it into the epoxy standoff plug using a suitable tool on the 1 inch hex of the 600AMT, torquing to 50-60 ft-lbs.
- Install the Alignment Bracket
Remove the bushing extender clamp and elbow clamp from the alignment bracket. Position the alignment bracket on the bushing extender, measuring 2.5 inches (63.5mm) from the grounding eye. Assemble the bushing extender clamp to the alignment bracket using the supplied hardware. Torque by alternating sides until the clamp tabs are flush with each other and tight on both sides.
- Secure the Elbow in the Alignment Bracket
Carefully position the elbow within the alignment bracket, ensuring the elbow cuff is lined up evenly with the bushing extender cuff. Assemble the elbow clamp to the alignment bracket using the supplied hardware. Torque by alternating sides until the clamp tabs are flush with each other and tight on both sides. Ensure the elbow clamp notch faces the cable entrance of the elbow.
- Install the LINK-C Connector
Clean and thoroughly lubricate both 600 ampere interfaces of the LINK-C connector with ELASTIMOLD lubricant. Align the LINK-C connector so it is perpendicular to the switch faceplate when inserted into the bushing extender and elbow. Insert the LINK-C connector into both the bushing extender and the elbow, ensuring both lever arms are on the inside of the alignment bracket legs. Engage the pivot pin into the slots in the alignment bracket legs. While pushing inward, use a hot stick to move the lever arms downward, engaging the roller pin and moving the LINK-C inward. Continue moving lever arms until they are perpendicular to the alignment bracket leg.
- Ground the System and Install Mating Products
Ground the elbow by feeding a #14 AWG or #12 AWG solid copper wire through its grounding eye, twisting it tight, and connecting it to ground. Clean and lubricate the 200 amp interface on the LINK-C connector. Ground and then install the desired mating product onto the 200 amp interface according to its specific installation instructions. Ground the cable: if using concentric neutral cable, twist the neutral wires together and connect to ground with an appropriate connector; if using 20MA or 21MA grounding devices, connect their ground lead to ground with a suitable connector. For three-phase installations, tie all grounds from all three phases to a common ground point.
