How to Install the 25LRTP Deadbreak Elbow Reducing Tap Plug

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for installing the 25LRTP Deadbreak Elbow Reducing Tap Plug, designed for 600/900 ampere stick-operable systems with a 200 ampere tap, ensuring proper assembly and grounding.

Estimated time: 1h

Tools needed:

600-AT operating tool, Torque wrench, Rod for 600-AT operating tool eye, Wire strippers, Crimping tool

Supplies needed:

25LRTP Reducing Tap Plug, ELASTIMOLD approved lubricant, Spade contact (03600XXX), 600 amp LR elbow connector, #14AWG copper wire (or equivalent), Appropriate grounding connector, Mating product (insulating cap, elbow arrester, loadbreak elbow, or grounding elbow)

  1. Prepare Cable and Install Elbow Connector

DANGER: All apparatus must be de-energized during installation or removal of parts. Prepare the cable using a spade contact (03600XXX) and install the 600 amp LR elbow connector according to its instructions. Before making the first crimp, align the spade contact on the cable so it lies flat on the apparatus bushing contact.

  2. Clean, Lubricate, and Insert Reducing Tap Plug

Remove the protective cap from the reducing tap plug and the elbow. Clean and lubricate the entire elbow connector interface and reducing tap plug interface with the supplied or ELASTIMOLD approved lubricant. IMPORTANT: Ensure the spade contact in the elbow connector is fully seated against the top of the housing. Insert the reducing tap plug into the elbow connector.

  3. Assemble and Hand Tighten Reducing Tap Plug

Assemble the reducing tap plug to the elbow connector by turning it in a clockwise direction. Hand tighten the reducing tap plug.

  4. Torque Reducing Tap Plug

Slowly insert the 600-AT operating tool into the reducing tap plug until fully seated. Torque the reducing tap plug in a clockwise direction to the elbow connector with a suitable tool applied to the hex portion of the 600-AT operating tool. Continue torquing UNTIL THE INTERNAL SHEAR PIN BREAKS (15 to 18 complete revolutions and 35 to 50 foot-pounds). Remove the guide pin.

  5. Assemble Elbow Connector to Apparatus Bushing

Clean and lubricate the entire apparatus bushing interface and remaining elbow connector interface with the supplied or ELASTIMOLD approved lubricant. Assemble the elbow connector on the apparatus bushing with the 600-AT by inserting a suitable rod through the eye of the tool and turning clockwise while pushing the elbow toward the apparatus bushing. Continue rotating until the 600-AT ratchets, signifying proper assembly torque. Remove the 600-AT from the reducing tap plug.

  6. Prepare Grounding Eye Wire

Insert one end of a #14AWG copper wire (or equivalent) through a convenient grounding eye of the elbow, leaving sufficient length to allow movement of the elbow to the appropriate parking stand. Make a small loop and twist tightly, taking care not to damage the eye.

  7. Connect Grounding Wires

Connect the grounding eye wire and any cable grounding wires (concentric neutral, grounding device lead, or metallic shield jumper) to a common ground point using an appropriate connector. Ensure sufficient length for movement to a parking stand. For three-phase installations, tie all grounds from all three phases to a common ground point. Waterproof the jacket if connecting a metallic shielded cable without a grounding device.

  8. Install Mating Product

Clean and lubricate the entire reducing tap plug interface and the mating product (insulating cap, elbow arrester, loadbreak elbow, or grounding elbow) with the supplied or ELASTIMOLD approved lubricant. Install the mating product to the reducing tap plug interface following its specific installation instructions.

  9. Verify Seating Indication

Verify the complete assembly of an insulated cap or elbow by ensuring no portion of the yellow band is visible when viewed from the side. This indicates proper seating.
