Overview

The ABB K151SR-B2220 is a 15/25 kV, 200 Amp deadbreak straight receptacle designed for medium-voltage cable terminations in industrial and utility applications. The receptacle features an all-copper compression lug for superior electrical conductivity and corrosion resistance, supporting conductor sizes from AWG #2 compressed stranded to #1 solid (33.62 mm²). It accommodates cable insulation diameters between 0.635 inches and 0.905 inches, making it compatible with a wide range of medium-voltage cables. The deadbreak design allows safe connection and disconnection under load conditions, reducing downtime during maintenance. The unit includes a non-corrosive, capacitively coupled voltage test point with a removable protective cap for safe diagnostics. The fully submersible molded rubber housing is constructed from 100% peroxide-cured EPDM materials, ensuring long-term durability in harsh environments. The K151SR-B2220 is engineered to mate with ABB’s K151SP straight plug and other compatible Elastimold products, providing a secure and insulated interface for medium-voltage power distribution systems. Bails are required for operation and must be ordered separately. This receptacle is ideal for terminating UD cables with concentric neutral and extruded insulation shielding, as well as other cable types when used with the appropriate shield adapter.

How to Install the Elastimold 151SR/K151SR Straight Receptacle

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for preparing cables, installing, and grounding the Elastimold 151SR/K151SR Straight Receptacle for high-voltage electrical connections.

Estimated time: 1h 30m

Tools needed:

Cable cutting tool, Wire strippers, Wire brush, Crimping tool, Rags

Supplies needed:

Solid dielectric type cable, Conductor Contact (male), Nylon Venting Rod, Lubricant (supplied), Crimp Chart, Approved solvent, #14 AWG copper wire (or equivalent), Elastimold bail, Silicone grease

  1. De-energize and Inspect Apparatus

Ensure all apparatus is de-energized before beginning installation. Inspect all parts for damage, verify ratings, and confirm compatibility with mating products. Gather all required tools and maintain cleanliness throughout the procedure.

  2. Prepare Cable Jacket and Shield

For jacketed concentric neutral cable, cut and remove the cable jacket 8 inches from the end, allowing sufficient neutral wires for grounding. For copper tape shield cable, cut and remove the cable jacket 7 1/2 inches from the end, then remove the copper tape shield 6 1/2 inches from the end. If using an ECS or MA grounding device, follow its specific jacket cut-back instructions.

  3. Prepare Conductor and Crimp Contact

Remove 7/8 to 1 inch (or 1 3/4 to 1 7/8 inches for #1 stranded/compressed and #1/0 compressed/solid aluminum cable) of cable insulation and conductive shield, cutting squarely. Wire brush bare aluminum conductors and immediately insert into the crimp barrel containing inhibitor. Crimp the socket terminal onto the bared conductor, ensuring it's fully seated. Start crimps at the crimp line and rotate each successive crimp 90 degrees. Wipe excess inhibitor from aluminum cable contacts.

  4. Clean Insulation and Prepare Semi-Conductive Shield

Remove the semi-conductive shield 7 9/16 to 7 5/8 inches back from the end of the pin with a straight, smooth, "squared" cut, taking care not to cut or nick the insulation. Pencil insulation 1/8 inch. Thoroughly clean the outer jacket and insulation with an approved solvent, wiping from the cable end towards the outer jacket, to remove all semi-conducting residue. If using an ECS or MA grounding device, install it now per its instructions.

  5. Lubricate Receptacle and Insert Cable

Remove the protective cap from the straight receptacle, keeping the cable insulation and receptacle clean. Apply the supplied lubricant sparingly to the cable and the inside of the housing. Push the cable into the housing until the base of the pin chamfer is flush with the inside face of the receptacle. If not immediately connecting, replace with an appropriate HV insulated cap or Elastimold insulating plug (K150DP), as the shipping cover is not an insulating device.

  6. Connect to Mating Plug (If Applicable)

Lubricate the nose of the mating plug with silicone grease. Insert the nylon rod into the receptacle face until it bottoms (approx. 1 3/4 inches), ensuring it is not cut. Insert the plug assembly into the receptacle as far as possible, then pull out the nylon rod. Secure the electrical connection with an Elastimold bail.

  7. Ground the Cable

If an ELASTIMOLD grounding device is not used, connect a customer-supplied length of #14 AWG (or equivalent) copper wire through the grounding tab and twist tightly. Connect this grounding assembly to the system ground by merging it with the cable shield of each cable. Seal all grounding wires and connections to prevent corrosion.
