How to Install the K151SP Straight Plug

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for preparing cables, crimping the conductor contact, and installing the K151SP Straight Plug onto solid dielectric type cables for 15kV and 25kV class systems.

Estimated time: 1h

Tools needed:

Cable cutting tool, Measuring tape or ruler, Wire brush, Crimp tool (refer to crimp chart), Rag

Supplies needed:

K151SP Straight Plug (includes Conductor Contact, Nylon Venting Rod, Lubricant), Approved solvent, Silicone grease, #14 AWG copper wire (customer supplied), Sealing material (for grounding wires), ELASTIMOLD bail (required for mating deadbreak products), Solid dielectric type cable

  1. Ensure Safety and Inspect Components

Before beginning, ensure all apparatus are de-energized to prevent serious injury or fatality. Inspect all K151SP components for damage, proper rating, and compatibility with mating parts. Confirm all required tools and supplies are at hand and maintain a clean work area throughout the procedure. This product must only be installed by competent personnel trained in high voltage electrical equipment safety practices.

  2. Prepare Cable Jacket and Shield

For jacketed concentric neutral cable, cut and remove the cable jacket 8 inches from the cable end, ensuring sufficient concentric neutral wires for grounding. For copper tape shield cable, cut and remove the cable jacket 7-1/2 inches from the cable end, then remove the copper tape shield 6-1/2 inches from the cable end. If using an ECS or MA grounding device, refer to its specific instructions for outer jacket cut back.

  3. Prepare Cable Insulation and Conductor

Remove 7/8 inch to 1 inch of cable insulation and conductive shield, cutting squarely without penciling. For #1 stranded/compressed and #1/0 compressed/solid aluminum cable, remove 1-3/4 inches to 1-7/8 inches. Wire brush bare aluminum conductors immediately and insert them into the crimp barrel, which contains inhibitor.

  4. Crimp the Conductor Socket Terminal

Crimp the socket terminal onto the bared conductor, holding the crimp barrel firmly against the cable insulation. Refer to the crimp chart provided with the contact. Begin crimping at the crimp line imprinted on the barrel, rotating each successive crimp or indent 90 degrees. Carefully wipe any excess inhibitor from the contact and cable insulation.

  5. Finish Semi-Conductive Shield and Clean Insulation

Temporarily remove the plastic pin. Remove the semi-conductive shield 7-3/4 inches to 7-13/16 inches back from the end of the socket with a straight, smooth, squared cut, taking care not to cut or nick the insulation. Replace the plastic pin. Pencil the insulation 1/8 inch. Thoroughly clean the outer jacket and insulation with an approved solvent, wiping from the cable end toward the outer jacket, to remove all traces of semi-conducting residue. If using an ECS or MA grounding device, install it now following its instructions.

  6. Lubricate Cable and Slide Collar

Slide the collar, smaller end first, onto each cable. Keep the cable insulation and plug clean. Apply the supplied lubricant sparingly to the cable as shown in the documentation and to the inside of the housing. DO NOT SUBSTITUTE other lubricants, as they may be harmful to the product or its mating product.

  7. Install Cable into Plug Housing

Push the prepared cable firmly into the plug housing until the leading edge of the socket contact is flush with the front edge of the plug. Once seated, remove the plastic pin from the socket and discard it.

  8. Connect to Mating Receptacle and Secure

Lubricate the nose of the K151SP plug with silicone grease. Carefully place the nylon rod into the mating receptacle face until it bottoms (approximately 1-3/4 inches), ensuring the rod is not cut during mating. Insert the plug assembly into the receptacle as far as possible. Pull out and remove the nylon rod. Secure the electrical connection using an ELASTIMOLD bail; refer to the Bailing Instruction Sheet (150TB-4) for proper installation. A bailing arrangement is required when this product is used with any mating Elastimold deadbreak product.

  9. Connect System Ground

If an ELASTIMOLD grounding device is not being used, connect a length of customer-supplied #14 AWG (or equivalent) copper wire through the grounding tab and twist it tightly. Connect the grounding assembly of the connector to the system ground by merging it with the cable shield of each cable. Seal the grounding wires and connections to prevent corrosion.
