How to Install the K151SP Straight Plug for High Voltage Cable Connections
This guide provides detailed instructions for installing the ELASTIMOLD K151SP Straight Plug, designed for connecting solid dielectric type cables to other ELASTIMOLD products or electrical apparatus on 15kV and 25kV class systems. Ensure all apparatus are de-energized before beginning installation.
Estimated time: 1h 30m
Tools needed:
Wire brush, Crimp tool, Rag, Approved solvent
Supplies needed:
Conductor Contact (female), Nylon Venting Rod, Lubricant (supplied), ELASTIMOLD bail, #14 AWG copper wire (customer supplied), Silicone grease
- Prepare the Work Area and Cable
Ensure all apparatus are de-energized during installation or removal of parts. Inspect all parts for damage, rating, and compatibility with mating parts. For jacketed concentric neutral cables, cut and remove the cable jacket 8 inches from the end, allowing sufficient neutral wires for grounding. For copper tape shield cables, cut and remove the cable jacket 7-1/2 inches from the end, then remove the copper tape shield 6-1/2 inches from the end. Follow specific instructions for ECS or MA grounding devices if applicable.
- Prepare the Conductor End
Remove 7/8 to 1 inch (or 1-3/4 to 1-7/8 inches for #1 stranded/compr. and #1/0 compt./solid aluminum cable) of cable insulation and conductive shield. Cut squarely, do not pencil. Wire brush bare aluminum conductors immediately and insert into the crimp barrel which contains inhibitor.
- Crimp the Socket Terminal
Crimp the socket terminal onto the bared conductor, holding the crimp barrel against the cable insulation. Refer to the crimp chart provided with the contact. Start crimps at the imprinted crimp line and rotate each successive crimp or indent 90 degrees. Carefully wipe any excess inhibitor from the contact and cable insulation.
- Prepare the Insulation and Clean
Temporarily remove the plastic pin. Remove the semi-conductive shield 7-3/4 to 7-13/16 inches back from the end of the socket with a straight, smooth, squared cut, ensuring not to cut or nick the insulation. Replace the plastic pin. Pencil the insulation 1/8 inch. Clean the outer jacket and thoroughly clean the insulation with an approved solvent and rag, wiping from the cable end toward the outer jacket to remove all traces of semi-conducting residue. If using an ECS or MA grounding device, install it now following its appropriate installation instructions.
- Lubricate and Position Collar
Slide the collar, smaller end first, onto the cable. Keep the cable insulation and plug clean. Apply the supplied lubricant sparingly to the cable as shown and to the inside of the housing. Do not substitute lubricants, as other lubricants may be harmful to this product or its mating product.
- Install Cable into Housing
Push the cable firmly into the housing until the leading edge of the socket contact is flush with the front edge of the plug. Remove the plastic pin from the socket and discard it.
- Connect to Mating Receptacle
Lubricate the nose of the plug with silicone grease. Place the nylon rod into the receptacle face until it bottoms (approximately 1-3/4 inches), taking care to ensure the nylon rod is not cut while mating parts, leaving material inside upon the interface. Insert the plug assembly into the receptacle as far as possible. Pull out and remove the nylon rod. Secure the electrical connection using an ELASTIMOLD bail, referencing the Bailing Instruction Sheet (150TB-4).
- Establish Grounding Connection
If an ELASTIMOLD grounding device is not being used, connect a length of #14 AWG (or equivalent) copper wire (customer supplied) through the grounding tab and twist tightly as shown. Then connect this grounding assembly of the connector to the system ground by merging it with the cable shield of each cable. Seal all grounding wires and connections to prevent corrosion.
