Overview

The ABB K151SR-C0230 is a 200 Amp, 15/25kV deadbreak elbow connector designed for medium-voltage cable systems. This straight receptacle model features an aluminum compression lug for secure, long-term terminations on compressed stranded or solid conductors sized from #1 AWG to 1/0 AWG (42.41 mm²). The connector accepts cable insulation diameters between 0.805 inch and 1.060 inch, providing compatibility with a range of MV cable constructions. This deadbreak elbow is part of ABB's K151SR series, a proven line of separable connectors for underground distribution networks. The deadbreak design allows for safe, load-break operations under energized conditions without exposing personnel to live parts, reducing arc flash hazards during maintenance. The straight receptacle configuration simplifies installation in confined spaces such as pad-mounted transformers, switchgear, or junction boxes where axial cable entry is required. The aluminum compression lug ensures low-resistance connections with minimal voltage drop, while the deadbreak interface maintains dielectric integrity even when repeatedly connected and disconnected. Note that bail mechanisms are required for proper operation but must be ordered separately to match system requirements. Typical applications include utility substations, commercial and industrial power distribution, renewable energy interconnections, and underground residential feeders. The K151SR-C0230 meets industry standards for medium-voltage separable connectors and is manufactured by ABB Installation Products, a leader in electrical connection solutions.

How to Install the 151SR/K151SR Straight Receptacle

This guide provides detailed instructions for installing the Elastimold 151SR/K151SR straight receptacle, designed to connect solid dielectric type cables or electrical apparatus. Ensure all apparatus are de-energized before beginning installation.

Estimated time: 1h

Tools needed:

Wire strippers, Wire brush, Crimping tool, Rag, Approved solvent, Nylon Venting Rod, Elastimold bail

Supplies needed:

Straight Receptacle (K151SR/151SR), Conductor Contact (male), Lubricant (supplied with product), Crimp barrel (contains inhibitor), Copper wire (#14 AWG or equivalent, customer supplied), Silicone grease (for mating plug), Elastimold Insulating Plug (K150DP, optional)

  1. Prepare the Cable Jacket and Shield

For jacketed concentric neutral cable: Cut and remove the cable jacket 8 inches from the cable end. Ensure sufficient concentric neutral wires are left for grounding. For copper tape shield cable: Cut and remove the cable jacket 7 1/2 inches from the cable end. Then, remove the copper tape shield 6 1/2 inches from the cable end. Safety Note: All apparatus must be de-energized during this process.

  2. Prepare the Conductor and Insulation

Remove 7/8 to 1 inch (or 1 3/4 to 1 7/8 inches for #1 stranded/compr. and #1/0 comp./solid aluminum cable) of cable insulation and conductive shield. Wire brush bare aluminum conductors immediately. Insert the prepared conductor into the crimp barrel, which contains inhibitor, ensuring it is fully seated. Cut the conductor squarely; do not pencil the cut.

  3. Crimp the Socket Terminal

Crimp the socket terminal onto the bared conductor. Start crimps at the crimp line imprinted on the barrel and rotate each successive crimp or indent 90 degrees. If using aluminum cable, carefully wipe any excess inhibitor from the contact and cable insulation.

  4. Trim and Clean the Semi-Conductive Shield

Remove the semi-conductive shield to a point 7 9/16 to 7 5/8 inches back from the end of the pin with a straight, smooth, "squared" cut. Do not cut or nick the insulation. Pencil the insulation 1/8 inch. Thoroughly clean the outer jacket and insulation with a rag wet with an approved solvent to remove all traces of semi-conducting residue. Always wipe from the end of the cable toward the outer jacket.

  5. Lubricate and Insert Cable into Receptacle

Remove the protective cap from the straight receptacle, keeping the cable insulation and receptacle clean. Apply the supplied lubricant sparingly to the cable as shown in the instructions and to the inside of the housing. Do not substitute lubricants. Push the cable into the housing until the base of the pin chamfer is flush with the inside face of the receptacle. Important: If the receptacle is not to be immediately connected, replace the protective cover (for dirt protection only). For insulation, obtain an Elastimold Insulating Plug (K150DP).

  6. Connect to a Mating Plug (If Applicable)

Lubricate the nose of the mating plug with silicone grease. Place the nylon rod into the receptacle face until it bottoms (approximately 1 3/4 inches). Exercise care to ensure the nylon rod is not cut during mating. Insert the plug assembly into the receptacle as far as possible. Pull out the nylon rod. Secure the electrical connection with the aid of an Elastimold bail.

  7. Ground the Cable

If an ELASTIMOLD grounding device is not being used, connect a length of #14 AWG (or equivalent) copper wire (customer supplied) through the grounding tab and twist tightly. Connect the grounding assembly of the connector to the system ground by merging it with the cable shield of each cable. Seal the grounding wires and connections to prevent corrosion.
