How to Install the K151SP Straight Plug for High Voltage Cable Connections
This guide provides detailed instructions for installing the K151SP Straight Plug, designed for connecting solid dielectric type cables to other ELASTIMOLD products or electrical apparatus on 15kV and 25kV class systems. Proper installation by trained personnel is crucial for safety and product integrity.
Estimated time: 1h
Tools needed:
Wire brush, Crimping tool (for socket terminal), Rag, Approved solvent
Supplies needed:
K151SP Straight Plug, Conductor Contact (female), Nylon Venting Rod, Pin Installation, Lubricant (supplied), Crimp Chart, Cable (solid dielectric type), Inhibitor (in crimp barrel), Plastic pin (temporary), Silicone grease, ELASTIMOLD bail (required for mating deadbreak products), Copper wire (#14 AWG or equivalent, if not using ELASTIMOLD grounding device)
- Ensure De-energized State and Personnel Competence
Before beginning installation, ensure all apparatus is de-energized. This product must only be installed by competent personnel trained in good safety practices involving high voltage electrical equipment. Failure to follow these instructions will result in damage to the product and serious or fatal injury.
- Prepare Cable Jacket (Concentric Neutral or Copper Tape Shield)
For jacketed concentric neutral cable, cut and remove the cable jacket 8 inches from the cable end, ensuring sufficient neutral wires for grounding. For copper tape shield cable, cut and remove the cable jacket 7-1/2 inches from the cable end, then remove the copper tape shield 6-1/2 inches from the cable end. Refer to specific ECS or MA grounding device instructions if applicable.
- Prepare Cable Insulation and Conductive Shield
Remove 7/8 inch to 1 inch (or 1-3/4 inches to 1-7/8 inches for #1 stranded/compr. and #1/0 compt./solid aluminum cable) of cable insulation and conductive shield. Cut squarely, do not pencil. Wire brush bare aluminum conductors immediately and insert into the crimp barrel containing inhibitor.
- Crimp Socket Terminal
Crimp the socket terminal onto the bared conductor, holding the crimp barrel against the cable insulation. Refer to the crimp chart provided with the contact. Start crimps at the imprinted crimp line and rotate each successive crimp or indent 90 degrees. Carefully wipe any excess inhibitor from the contact and cable insulation.
- Remove Semi-conductive Shield and Clean Insulation
Temporarily remove the plastic pin. Remove the semi-conductive shield 7-3/4 inches to 7-13/16 inches back from the end of the socket with a straight, smooth, squared cut, ensuring not to cut or nick the insulation. Replace the plastic pin. Pencil the insulation 1/8 inch. Clean the outer jacket and thoroughly clean the insulation with an approved solvent, wiping from the cable end toward the outer jacket to remove all semi-conducting residue. If using an ECS or MA grounding device, install it now per its instructions.
- Lubricate Cable and Position Collar
Slide the collar, smaller end first, onto each cable. Refer to the bailing instruction sheet. Keep the cable insulation and plug clean. Apply the supplied lubricant sparingly to the cable as shown and to the inside of the housing. Do not substitute lubricants, as others may be harmful.
- Install Cable into Housing
Push the cable into the housing until the leading edge of the socket contact is flush with the front edge of the plug. Remove the plastic pin from the socket and discard it.
- Connect to Mating Receptacle
Lubricate the nose of the plug with silicone grease. Place the nylon rod into the receptacle face until it bottoms (approximately 1-3/4 inches), taking care not to cut the rod. Insert the plug assembly into the receptacle as far as possible. Pull out the nylon rod. Secure the electrical connection using an ELASTIMOLD bail, referencing Bailing Instruction Sheet (150TB-4).
- Connect System Ground
If an ELASTIMOLD grounding device is not used, connect a length of #14 AWG or equivalent copper wire (customer supplied) through the grounding tab and twist tightly. Connect this grounding assembly to the system ground by merging it with the cable shield of each cable. Seal the grounding wires and connections to prevent corrosion.
