How to Install the 151SR/K151SR Straight Receptacle
This guide provides detailed instructions for installing the 151SR/K151SR Straight Receptacle, including cable preparation, crimping, lubrication, and connection to mating Elastimold products for 15kV or 25kV class systems.
Estimated time: 1h 30m
Tools needed:
Wire cutters, Wire strippers, Wire brush, Crimp tool, Rag, Approved solvent
Supplies needed:
151SR/K151SR Straight Receptacle, Conductor Contact (male), Nylon Venting Rod, Lubricant (supplied), Crimp chart, Solid dielectric type cable, Inhibitor (in crimp barrel), Silicone grease, Elastimold bail, #14 AWG or equivalent copper wire, Corrosion prevention sealant, Elastimold insulating plug (K150DP) (optional)
- Ensure Safety and Inspect Components
Before starting, ensure all apparatus are de-energized. This product must be installed only by competent personnel trained in high voltage safety practices. Inspect all package contents for completeness and damage, and verify proper fit with cable and mating products. Remove any protective shipping covers and replace with appropriate HV insulated caps or connectors if the circuit will be submerged or energized before final connection. Note that a bailing arrangement is required when this product is used with any mating Elastimold deadbreak product.
- Prepare Cable Jacket
For jacketed concentric neutral cable, cut and remove the cable jacket 8 inches from the cable end, ensuring sufficient neutral wires for grounding. For copper tape shield cable, cut and remove the cable jacket 7 1/2 inches from the cable end, then remove the copper tape shield 6 1/2 inches from the cable end. Refer to ECS or MA grounding device instructions if applicable for outer jacket cut back.
- Prepare Conductor and Insulation
Remove 7/8 to 1 inch of cable insulation and conductive shield. For #1 stranded/compressed and #1/0 compressed/solid aluminum cable, remove 1 3/4 to 1 7/8 inches. Cut squarely, do not pencil. Wire brush bare aluminum conductors and immediately insert into the crimp barrel, which contains inhibitor.
- Crimp Socket Terminal
Crimp the socket terminal onto the bared conductor, ensuring the conductor remains fully seated in the connector. Refer to the crimp chart provided with the contact. Start crimps at the imprinted crimp line and rotate each successive crimp or indent 90 degrees. If using aluminum cable, carefully wipe any excess inhibitor from the contact and cable insulation.
- Prepare Semi-Conductive Shield and Clean Insulation
Remove the semi-conductive shield to a point 7 9/16 to 7 5/8 inches back from the end of the pin with a straight, smooth, squared cut. DO NOT CUT OR NICK THE INSULATION. Pencil the insulation 1/8 inch. Clean the outer jacket and thoroughly clean the insulation with an approved solvent, wiping from the cable end towards the outer jacket to remove all traces of semi-conducting residue. If using an ECS or MA grounding device, install it now following its specific instructions.
- Lubricate Receptacle and Cable
Remove the protective cap from the straight receptacle, keeping the cable insulation and receptacle clean. Sparingly apply the supplied lubricant to the cable (prepared insulation area) and to the inside of the receptacle housing. DO NOT SUBSTITUTE lubricants, as others may harm the product or its mating part.
- Insert Cable into Housing
Push the prepared cable into the receptacle housing until the base of the pin chamfer is flush with the inside face of the receptacle. If the receptacle is not to be immediately connected, replace the protective cover (note: shipping cover offers dirt protection only, not insulation; use an Elastimold insulating plug K150DP if insulation is required).
- Connect to Mating Plug
To connect to a mating plug, first lubricate the nose of the plug with silicone grease. Place the nylon rod into the receptacle face until it bottoms (approximately 1 3/4 inches), taking care not to cut the rod. Insert the plug assembly into the receptacle as far as possible. Pull out the nylon rod. Finally, secure the electrical connection with an Elastimold bail.
- Ground the Cable
If an ELASTIMOLD grounding device is not being used, connect a customer-supplied length of #14 AWG (or equivalent) copper wire through the grounding tab and twist tightly. Connect this grounding assembly of the connector to the system ground by merging it with the cable shield of each cable. Seal the grounding wires and connections to prevent corrosion.
