How to Install the K151SP Straight Plug Connector
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for installing the K151SP Straight Plug, designed for connecting solid dielectric type cables on 15kV and 25kV class systems. Ensure all safety precautions are followed for high voltage electrical equipment.
Estimated time: 1h 30m
Tools needed:
Cable cutting tool, Wire strippers, Crimp tool, Wire brush, Measuring tape, Rag
Supplies needed:
K151SP Straight Plug kit (includes plug, contact, nylon rod, lubricant), Solid dielectric type cable, Approved solvent, Silicone grease, Elastimold bail (for mating connection), #14 AWG copper wire (if not using Elastimold grounding device), Sealing material (for grounding wires)
- Prepare the Cable Jacket
DANGER: Ensure all apparatus is de-energized before starting. For jacketed concentric neutral cable, cut and remove the cable jacket 8 inches from the cable end, ensuring sufficient neutral wires for grounding. For copper tape shield cable, cut and remove the cable jacket 7-1/2 inches from the cable end, then remove the copper tape shield 6-1/2 inches from the cable end. If using an ECS or MA grounding device, follow its specific jacket cut-back instructions.
- Prepare Cable Insulation and Conductive Shield
Remove 7/8 inch to 1 inch of cable insulation and conductive shield. For #1 stranded/compressed and #1/0 compressed/solid aluminum cable, remove 1-3/4 inches to 1-7/8 inches. Cut squarely, do not pencil. Wire brush bare aluminum conductors and immediately insert them into the crimp barrel, which contains inhibitor.
- Crimp the Socket Terminal
Crimp the socket terminal onto the bared conductor, holding the crimp barrel against the cable insulation. Refer to the crimp chart provided with the contact. Start crimps at the imprinted crimp line and rotate each successive crimp or indent 90 degrees. Carefully wipe any excess inhibitor from the contact and cable insulation.
- Prepare for Plug Assembly
Temporarily remove the plastic pin. Remove the semi-conductive shield 7-3/4 inches to 7-13/16 inches back from the end of the socket with a straight, smooth, squared cut. WARNING: Do not cut or nick the insulation. Replace the plastic pin. Pencil the insulation 1/8 inch. Clean the outer jacket and thoroughly clean the insulation with an approved solvent, wiping from the cable end toward the outer jacket to remove all semi-conducting residue. If using an ECS or MA grounding device, install it now according to its instructions.
- Lubricate and Position Collar
Slide the collar, smaller end first, onto each cable. Keep the cable insulation and plug clean. Apply the supplied lubricant sparingly to the cable and to the inside of the housing. WARNING: Do not substitute lubricants, as others may be harmful to the product or its mating part.
- Install Cable into Housing
Push the cable into the housing until the leading edge of the socket contact is flush with the front edge of the plug. Remove the plastic pin from the socket and discard it.
- Connect to Mating Receptacle
Lubricate the nose of the plug with silicone grease. Place the nylon rod into the receptacle face until it bottoms (approximately 1-3/4 inches). Exercise care to ensure the nylon rod is not cut during mating, which could leave material inside the interface. Insert the plug assembly into the receptacle as far as possible. Pull out and remove the nylon rod. Secure the electrical connection using an ELASTIMOLD bail, referencing the Bailing Instruction Sheet (150TB-4).
- Complete Grounding Connection
If an ELASTIMOLD grounding device is not being used, connect a length of customer-supplied #14 AWG or equivalent copper wire through the grounding tab and twist tightly. Connect the grounding assembly of the connector to the system ground by merging it with the cable shield of each cable. Seal the grounding wires and connections to prevent corrosion.
