Overview

The ABB K151SP-C2240 is a 15kV, 200 Amp deadbreak straight plug designed for medium-voltage cable terminations in industrial and utility applications. This plug features a fully shielded, fully submersible molded rubber housing with 100% peroxide-cured EPDM insulation and conductive materials for long-term reliability. The copper compression lug ensures secure, low-resistance connections for compressed stranded conductors (1/0 AWG) or solid compact conductors (2/0 AWG or 53.49 mm²). The K151SP-C2240 accommodates cable insulation diameters from 0.805 inch to 1.060 inch, providing a wide cable range with minimal size variations. It includes a provision for ground wire connection and is designed to mate with compatible Elastimold® products such as the K151T tee splice and K151SR straight receptacle. This plug is rated for 15kV voltage class with a maximum phase-to-ground operating voltage of 8.3kV and phase-to-phase voltage of 14.4kV. It meets ANSI/IEEE Standard 386 with a 95kV BIL impulse withstand, 34kV AC one-minute withstand, and 53kV DC 15-minute withstand. The K151SP-C2240 supports continuous 200 Amp current and 10kA symmetrical momentary ratings for 10 cycles. Ideal for terminating UD cable with concentric neutral and extruded insulation shielding, this plug is suitable for switchgear, transformers, and other electrical distribution equipment where reliable, high-current terminations are critical. The absence of a test point or seal makes it a cost-effective solution for applications where those features are unnecessary.

How to Install the K151SP Straight Plug

This guide provides detailed instructions for preparing the cable and installing the K151SP Straight Plug, designed for 15kV and 25kV class systems, to connect to compatible Elastimold products.

Estimated time: 1h 30m

Tools needed:

Cable cutting tool, Wire strippers, Wire brush, Crimp tool, Rag, Measuring tape

Supplies needed:

K151SP Straight Plug, Conductor Contact (female), Nylon Venting Rod, Lubricant (supplied), Approved solvent, Silicone grease, Elastimold bail, Copper wire (#14 AWG or equivalent), Sealing material

  1. De-energize and Inspect Apparatus

Before beginning installation, ensure all apparatus is de-energized. Inspect all K151SP parts for damage, proper rating, and compatibility with mating products. This product must be installed only by competent personnel trained in high voltage electrical equipment safety practices.

  2. Prepare Cable Jacket

For jacketed concentric neutral cable, cut and remove the cable jacket 8 inches from the cable end, ensuring sufficient concentric neutral wires for grounding. For copper tape shield cable, cut and remove the cable jacket 7-1/2 inches from the cable end, then remove the copper tape shield 6-1/2 inches from the cable end. If using an ECS or MA grounding device, follow its specific jacket cut-back instructions.

  3. Prepare Cable Insulation and Conductive Shield

Remove 7/8 to 1 inch of cable insulation and conductive shield. For #1 stranded/compressed and #1/0 compressed/solid aluminum cable, remove 1-3/4 to 1-7/8 inches. Cut squarely; do not pencil the cut. Wire brush bare aluminum conductors immediately and insert them into the crimp barrel containing inhibitor.

  4. Crimp Socket Terminal

Crimp the socket terminal onto the bared conductor, holding the crimp barrel against the cable insulation. Refer to the crimp chart provided with the contact. Start crimps at the imprinted crimp line and rotate each successive crimp 90 degrees. Carefully wipe any excess inhibitor from the contact and cable insulation.

  5. Prepare Semi-Conductive Shield and Clean Insulation

Temporarily remove the plastic pin. Remove the semi-conductive shield 7-3/4 to 7-13/16 inches back from the end of the socket with a straight, smooth, squared cut, taking care not to cut or nick the insulation. Replace the plastic pin. Pencil the insulation 1/8 inch. Clean the outer jacket and thoroughly clean the insulation with an approved solvent, wiping from the cable end towards the outer jacket to remove all semi-conducting residue. If using an ECS or MA grounding device, install it now per its instructions.

  6. Lubricate Cable and Housing

Slide the collar, smaller end first, onto each cable. Keep the cable insulation and plug clean. Apply the supplied lubricant sparingly to the cable and the inside of the housing as shown in the product diagram. Do not substitute other lubricants, as they may be harmful to the product.

  7. Install Cable into Plug Housing

Push the cable into the housing until the leading edge of the socket contact is flush with the front edge of the plug. Once seated, remove the plastic pin from the socket and discard it.

  8. Connect to Mating Receptacle

Lubricate the nose of the K151SP plug with silicone grease. Insert the nylon rod into the mating receptacle face until it bottoms (approximately 1-3/4 inches), ensuring the rod is not cut during mating. Insert the K151SP plug assembly into the receptacle as far as possible. Pull out and remove the nylon rod. Secure the electrical connection using an ELASTIMOLD bail, referring to the Bailing Instruction Sheet (150TB-4).

  9. Connect Grounding (if no ELASTIMOLD device)

If an ELASTIMOLD grounding device is not being used, connect a customer-supplied length of #14 AWG (or equivalent) copper wire through the grounding tab and twist tightly. Connect this grounding assembly to the system ground by merging it with the cable shield of each cable. Seal all grounding wires and connections to prevent corrosion.
