How to Install the 262LRJS Loadbreak Elbow Connector
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe installation and initial setup of the 262LRJS Loadbreak Elbow Connector with Jacket Seal, designed for terminating UD cable with jacketed concentric neutral wires.
Estimated time: 1h 30m
Tools needed:
Probe Wrench, Crimp Tool, Wire Brush, Wire Strippers, Hotstick, Voltage Sensing Device
Supplies needed:
262LRJS Elbow Connector Housing, Compression Lug, Probe, Lubricant (Do Not Substitute), Mastic Sealing Strips, No. 14 AWG (2.5mm) Copper Wire, Vinyl Tape, Grounding Connector
- Perform Pre-Installation Checks and Safety Measures
Before starting, verify that all package contents are complete and undamaged. Check all components for proper fit with the cable and mating products. Thread the probe into the compression lug by hand to ensure it turns freely for approximately four turns before becoming snug; if resistance is encountered, check for damage and replace the component. Ensure all apparatus is de-energized before proceeding with installation or removal of parts, except for test point caps and indicators. Always wear appropriate personal protective equipment.
- Prepare the Cable
First, train the cable to ensure adequate slack for ease of operation. Pull extra cable 24-26 inches beyond the bushing centerline and mark the centerline with tape. Remove the outer jacket 7-3/4 to 8 inches further back from this tape mark. Unwrap the neutral wires back past the bushing centerline and cut the excess cable squarely at the bushing centerline. Next, wrap one mastic strip, stretching slightly, around the cable jacket. Bend all neutral wires straight back over the mastic and along the cable, pressing them firmly into the mastic. Wrap a second mastic strip completely around the outer jacket, overlapping the imbedded neutral wires. Use a third mastic strip if needed to build up the outer diameter in this area, then cover all mastic with vinyl tape. Remove the insulation shield and insulation from the cable end, cutting squarely and taking care not to nick the conductor. Wire brush the bare aluminum conductors and immediately install the compression lug, rotating it to spread the inhibitor. Position the compression lug so its threaded hole aligns with the bushing bore. Crimp the lug according to the crimp chart, starting at the crimp line mark and rotating 180 degrees for each successive crimp. Carefully wipe any excessive inhibitor from the outside of the lug and cable. Finally, remove the insulation shield as shown in the diagram (6-7/8 inches from the end) and bevel the insulation end by a maximum of 1/8 inch. Thoroughly clean the insulation to remove all traces of conductive residue.
- Assemble the Elbow Connector
Lubricate the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing with the supplied lubricant; do not substitute. Keep the insulation clean and free of dirt. Slide the elbow connector onto the cable using a back-and-forth twisting motion. Wipe off any excess lubricant. Align the elbow with the compression lug’s threaded hole. Thread the probe into the lug by hand, taking care not to cross-thread. The probe must turn freely for approximately four turns before becoming snug. Tighten the probe with the supplied wrench until the wrench bends, indicating proper torque.
- Connect the Concentric Neutral
Insert one end of a separate No. 14 AWG (2.5mm) copper wire or equivalent through the grounding eye on the elbow. Twist the wire tightly, ensuring not to damage the eye. Pull the hood over the concentric neutral seal area on the cable by pulling the tabs and/or rolling the seal down. Twist all neutral wires together and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector. Ensure adequate slack in the wires for elbow operation.
- Connect the Elbow to the Bushing Plug and Perform Voltage Test
Lubricate the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing with the supplied lubricant. WARNING: Lubricate only if the transformer and elbow are known to be de-energized. Do not operate by hand; use a hotstick as per operating instructions. For the 262LRJS model, perform a voltage test to determine if the circuit is energized. Remove the test point cap with a hotstick, peeling it off at an angle. WARNING: The voltage test point is a capacitance device and not directly connected to the conductor; do not use conventional voltage measuring equipment. Use a suitable sensing device designed for capacitive test points and follow its manufacturer's directions. Treat the elbow as energized until the "no voltage" indication is confirmed by other means, as contamination or incorrect equipment can provide a false reading. After testing, clean and lubricate the inside surface of the cap with the supplied silicone lubricant and replace it on the test point.
