How to Install the K151SP Straight Plug

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for installing the K151SP Straight Plug, designed to connect solid dielectric type cables to other Elastimold products on 15kV and 25kV class systems. It covers cable preparation, crimping, and connection to a mating receptacle.

Estimated time: 1h 30m

Tools needed:

Wire strippers, Cable cutting tools, Measuring tape or ruler, Wire brush, Crimp tool, Rag, Approved solvent

Supplies needed:

Conductor Contact (female), Nylon Venting Rod, Lubricant (supplied), Crimp Chart, ELASTIMOLD bail, Copper wire (#14 AWG or equivalent, customer supplied), Sealing material (for grounding connections)

  1. Perform Safety Checks and Pre-Installation Verification

DANGER: Ensure all apparatus is de-energized during installation or removal. This product must be installed only by competent personnel trained in high voltage electrical equipment safety practices. Inspect all parts for damage, proper rating, and compatibility with mating components. Check package contents for completeness and ensure all components fit properly with the cable and/or mating products. Have all required tools ready and maintain cleanliness throughout the procedure. A bailing arrangement is required when this product is used with any mating Elastimold deadbreak product.

  2. Prepare Cable Jacket

For Jacketed Concentric Neutral cable, cut and remove the cable jacket 8 inches from the cable end. Ensure sufficient concentric neutral wires are available for connecting to the ground point. For Copper Tape Shield cable, cut and remove the cable jacket 7-1/2 inches from the cable end, then remove the copper tape shield 6-1/2 inches from the end of the cable. If using an ECS or MA grounding device, follow its specific installation instructions for outer jacket cut back.

  3. Remove Insulation and Conductive Shield

Remove 7/8 inch to 1 inch of cable insulation and conductive shield. For #1 stranded/compressed and #1/0 compressed/solid aluminum cable, remove 1-3/4 inches to 1-7/8 inches. Cut squarely; do not pencil the cut. Wire brush bare aluminum conductors and immediately insert them into the crimp barrel, which contains inhibitor.

  4. Crimp Socket Terminal

Crimp the socket terminal onto the bared conductor, holding the crimp barrel against the cable insulation. Refer to the crimp chart provided with the contact. Start the crimps at the crimp line imprinted on the crimp barrel and rotate each successive crimp or indent 90 degrees. Carefully wipe any excess inhibitor from the contact and cable insulation.

  5. Prepare Insulation and Clean

Temporarily remove the plastic pin. Remove the semi-conductive shield to a point 7-3/4 inches to 7-13/16 inches back from the end of the socket with a straight, smooth, 'squared' cut, taking care not to cut or nick the insulation. Replace the plastic pin. Pencil the insulation 1/8 inch. Clean the outer jacket and thoroughly clean the insulation to remove all traces of semi-conducting residue by wiping with a rag wet with an approved solvent. Always wipe from the end of the cable toward the outer jacket. If using an ECS or MA grounding device, install it now following its appropriate instructions.

  6. Lubricate and Position Collar

Slide the collar, smaller end first, onto each cable. Keep the cable insulation and plug clean. Apply the supplied lubricant sparingly to the cable as shown and to the inside of the housing. DO NOT SUBSTITUTE other lubricants, as they may be harmful to this product or its mating product.

  7. Install Cable into Housing

Push the cable into the housing until the leading edge of the socket contact is flush with the front edge of the plug. Remove the plastic pin from the socket and discard it.

  8. Connect to Mating Receptacle

Lubricate the nose of the plug with silicone grease. Place the nylon rod into the receptacle face until it bottoms (approximately 1-3/4 inches), ensuring the nylon rod is not cut while mating parts. Insert the plug assembly into the receptacle as far as possible. Pull out the nylon rod. Secure the electrical connection with an ELASTIMOLD bail, referencing the Bailing Instruction Sheet (150TB-4).

  9. Connect Grounding (if no ELASTIMOLD device)

If an ELASTIMOLD grounding device is not being used, connect a length of #14 AWG (or equivalent) copper wire (customer supplied) through the grounding tab and twist tightly. Then, connect this grounding assembly of the connector to the system ground by merging it with the cable shield of each cable. Seal the grounding wires and connections to prevent corrosion.
