How to Install the 167LRT Loadbreak Bushing Tap

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe installation and initial setup of the 167LRT Loadbreak Bushing Tap, including cable preparation, assembly, and grounding procedures.

Estimated time: 1h 30m

Tools needed:

Wrenches, Installation Tool, Crimp tool, Wire brush, Cable cut back template

Supplies needed:

167LRT Bushing Tap Housing, Compression Lug, Socket Contact, Lubricant (supplied, do not substitute), Well Contact, UD cable (with concentric neutral and semi-con shielding), No. 14 AWG (2.5mm) copper wire, Appropriate connector (for neutral to ground), Elastimold 15kV class 200ampere loadbreak elbow or accessory device, Insulated cap

  1. Prepare for Installation and Train Cable

DANGER: De-energize all apparatus before beginning installation. This product must be installed only by competent personnel trained in high voltage electrical equipment safety practices. Inspect all parts for damage, rating, and compatibility. Train the UD cable as shown in the diagram to ease operation, ensuring a minimum of 20 inches beyond the end of the cable. Cut excess cable squarely at the center line of the bushing.

  2. Prepare the Cable End

Unwrap and bind concentric neutral wires 8-1/2 inches back from the end of the cable. Remove the shield and insulation from the cable end, cutting squarely without nicking the conductor. Wire brush bare aluminum conductors and immediately install the compression lug, rotating it to spread inhibitor. Align the compression lug's threaded hole with the bushing bore. Crimp the lug starting at the crimp line mark, rotating 180 degrees for each successive crimp. Carefully wipe excessive inhibitor from the outside of the lug and cable. Remove the semi-con shield as shown in the template. Bevel the insulation end a maximum of 1/8 inch. Thoroughly clean the insulation to remove all traces of conductive residue.

  3. Assemble the Bushing Well Contact

Thread the well contact onto the bushing well stud by hand, taking care not to cross-thread. Tighten the well contact with the supplied wrench until the wrench bends, signifying that the proper assembly torque has been reached.

  4. Assemble the Bushing Tap Housing

Remove the protective cap from the bushing tap and the socket contact stored inside. Lubricate the cable insulation and the inside of the bushing housing with the supplied lubricant (DO NOT SUBSTITUTE). Keep insulation clean of dirt and grime, and do not introduce any grease into the gap between the lug and the insulation. Slide the bushing tap onto the cable with a back and forth twisting motion. Wipe off all excess grease. Align the bushing with the compression lug hole. Assemble the socket contact into the bushing tap, ensuring the socket contact stud passes through the lug hole.

  5. Mount the Bushing Tap into the Apparatus Bushing Well

Inspect the apparatus bushing well to ensure it is dry and free from all contaminants. Lubricate the bushing well interface area of the bushing tap with the supplied lubricant or ELASTIMOLD approved lubricants. Place the lubricated portion of the bushing tap into the apparatus bushing well. Insert the installation tool into the bore of the bushing tap until fully seated. Insert the wrench through the wrench hole of the tool and turn in a clockwise direction until the wrench bends, signifying the proper assembly torque. Remove the wrench and installation tool from the bushing tap.

  6. Connect the Concentric Neutral

Insert one end of a No. 14 AWG (2.5mm) copper wire or equivalent through the grounding eye on the bushing tap. Twist it tight, taking care not to damage the eye. Twist the neutral wires and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector.

  7. Prepare for Mating Product or Cap Installation

Thoroughly wipe the bushing tap interface clean of any contaminants. Apply a light, uniform coat of supplied lubricant to the interface, working it thoroughly into the surface. CAUTION: Excess lubricant may prevent a loadbreak elbow from being fully seated in the 'locked on' position. Install the mating products to the bushing tap following the instructions supplied with the mating products. If the bushing tap is not to be immediately mated with an elbow connector, insulated cap, or grounding elbow connector, replace the shipping cap with an appropriate HV insulated cap. Do not energize or submerge the apparatus with the shipping cap, as it is only a protective cover and not insulated or watertight.
