How to Install the Elastimold 167LRT Loadbreak Bushing Tap

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe and proper installation of the Elastimold 167LRT Loadbreak Bushing Tap. Ensure all apparatus is de-energized during installation and that only competent personnel trained in high voltage safety practices perform the installation.

Estimated time: 1h 30m

Tools needed:

Wrenches, Installation Tool, Wire brush, Crimp tool, Wire strippers

Supplies needed:

Bushing Tap Housing, Compression Lug, Socket Contact, Lubricant (Do Not Substitute), Well Contact, UD cable, No. 14 AWG (2.5mm) copper wire, Appropriate ground connector, Protective shipping cap, HV insulated cap or connector, Insulated Cap or Elbow

  1. Remove Shipping Covers and Install HV Caps

If the product is supplied with protective shipping cover(s), remove them. Immediately replace these shipping cover(s) with the appropriate HV insulated cap(s) or connector(s) before submerging or energizing the circuit. The shipping cap is not insulated or watertight and is for protection during handling only.

  2. Train the Cable

Train the UD cable as shown in the diagram to ease operation. Cut excess cable squarely at the center line of the bushing, ensuring a minimum of 20 inches beyond the end of the cable.

  3. Prepare the Cable End

Unwrap and bind concentric neutral wires 8-1/2 inches back from the end of the cable. Remove the shield and insulation from the cable end, cutting squarely and taking care not to nick the conductor. Wire brush bare aluminum conductors and immediately install the compression lug, rotating to spread inhibitor. Position the compression lug so its threaded hole aligns with the bushing bore. Crimp the lug according to the crimp chart, starting at the crimp line mark and rotating 180 degrees for each successive crimp. Carefully wipe excessive inhibitor from the outside of the lug and cable. Remove the semi-con shield as shown in the template and bevel the insulation end a maximum of 1/8 inch. Thoroughly clean the insulation to remove all traces of conductive residue.

  4. Assemble the Well Contact

Thread the well contact onto the bushing well stud by hand, ensuring not to cross-thread. Tighten the well contact with the supplied wrench until the wrench bends, indicating proper torque.

  5. Assemble the Bushing Tap Housing

Remove the protective cap from the bushing tap and retrieve the socket contact stored inside the bushing tap housing. Lubricate the cable insulation and the inside of the bushing housing with the supplied lubricant only; do not substitute. Keep insulation clean and avoid introducing grease into the gap between the lug and insulation. Slide the bushing tap onto the cable using a back and forth twisting motion, then wipe off all excess grease. Align the bushing with the compression lug hole and assemble the socket contact into the bushing tap, ensuring the socket contact stud passes through the lug hole.

  6. Mount the Bushing Tap

Inspect the apparatus bushing well to ensure it is dry and free from contaminants. Lubricate the bushing well interface area of the bushing tap with the supplied or Elastimold approved lubricant. Place the lubricated bushing tap into the apparatus bushing well. Insert the installation tool into the bore of the bushing tap until fully seated. Insert the wrench through the wrench hole of the tool and turn clockwise until the wrench bends, signifying proper assembly torque. Remove the wrench and installation tool from the bushing tap, cleaning the tool before insertion.

  7. Connect the Concentric Neutral

Insert one end of a No. 14 AWG (2.5mm) copper wire or equivalent through the grounding eye on the bushing tap. Twist it tight, taking care not to damage the eye. Twist the neutral wires together and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector.

  8. Prepare for Mating or Cap

Thoroughly wipe the bushing tap interface clean of any contaminants and apply a light, uniform coat of supplied lubricant, working it thoroughly into the surface. CAUTION: Excess lubricant may prevent a loadbreak elbow from being fully seated. Install mating products (e.g., loadbreak elbow, insulated cap, or grounding elbow connector) following their specific instructions. If not immediately mating, replace the shipping cap. Do not energize or submerge the apparatus with the shipping cap, as it is only a protective cover and not insulated or watertight.
