How to Install 167RLR/168RLR Loadbreak Replacement Elbow Connectors
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for installing Elastimold 167RLR and 168RLR Loadbreak Replacement Elbow Connectors, converting a livefront termination to a deadfront for UD cable.
Estimated time: 1h 30m
Tools needed:
Probe Wrench, Wire brush, Crimp tool, Cable cutting tool, Wire strippers, Measuring tape, Hotstick
Supplies needed:
Replacement Elbow Connector Housing, Compression Lug, Probe, Lubricant (Do Not Substitute), Hose Clamp, No. 14 AWG (2.5mm) copper wire, Grounding connector
- Perform Pre-Installation Checks and Ensure Safety
DANGER: All apparatus must be de-energized during installation or removal of parts. Check the contents of the package to ensure they are complete and undamaged. Verify all components for proper fit with the cable and/or mating products. Check threads by threading the probe into the compression lug; if resistance is encountered, check for damage and replace the component. Have all required tools at hand and maintain cleanliness throughout the procedure.
- Remove Livefront Terminator
Remove the rubber cap from the existing terminator. Cut off the connector at the top of the terminator. Disconnect the ground lead from the base of the terminator. Carefully remove the terminator housing from the cable.
- Prepare the Cable
Train the cable to be straight and in-line with the bushing centerline. Measure and cut the end of the cable to 10-1/2 inches from the bushing centerline. Remove 1-3/8 inches of cable insulation from the end of the cable, ensuring the cut is square and the conductor is not nicked. If the insulation shield measures less than 6-1/2 inches, proceed; otherwise, consult an ELASTIMOLD representative.
- Install the Compression Lug
Wire brush the bare aluminum conductor immediately after cutting. Install the compression lug onto the conductor, rotating it to spread the inhibitor. Position the compression lug so its contact threaded hole aligns with the bushing bore. Crimp the lug according to the crimp chart provided with the lug, starting at the crimp line mark and rotating 180 degrees for each successive crimp. Carefully wipe any excessive inhibitor from the outside of the lug and cable.
- Assemble the Elbow Housing
Lubricate the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing with the supplied lubricant; DO NOT SUBSTITUTE. Keep the insulation clean and avoid introducing excess grease into the gap between the lug and insulation. Slide the elbow connector onto the cable using a back-and-forth twisting motion, then wipe off all excess grease. Align the elbow with the compression lug's threaded hole. Thread the probe into the lug by hand, ensuring it turns freely for approximately four turns before becoming snug. Tighten the probe with the wrench until the wrench bends.
- Connect Concentric Neutral and Ground
Using a separate No. 14 AWG (2.5mm) copper wire or equivalent, insert one end through the grounding eye on the elbow and twist it tight, taking care not to damage the eye. Twist all neutral wires together and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector, ensuring adequate slack in the wires for elbow operation. Add the supplied hose clamp as shown in the documentation, tightening it snugly but without overtightening.
- Connect Elbow to Bushing Plug
Lubricate the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing with the supplied lubricant. IMPORTANT: Lubricate only if the transformer and elbow are known to be de-energized. Securely fasten a hotstick to the loadbreak connector pulling eye. Place the elbow connector receptacle area over the bushing plug, inserting the elbow male contact into the bushing until the first slight resistance is felt. Immediately push the elbow home with a fast, firm, straight motion to engage the internal lock on the elbow and bushing interface. Apply sufficient force to ensure the internal lock is fully engaged.
