How to Install the 168RLR Loadbreak Replacement Elbow Connector
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for installing the 168RLR Loadbreak Replacement Elbow Connector, converting a livefront termination to deadfront for UD cable.
Estimated time: 1h 30m
Tools needed:
Cable cutting tool, Wire strippers, Wire brush, Crimping tool, Probe wrench, Hotstick, Suitable sensing device (for capacitive test points)
Supplies needed:
168RLR Replacement Elbow Connector Housing, Compression Lug, Probe, Lubricant (supplied), Hose Clamp, Copper wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm), Appropriate ground connector, Silicone grease
- De-energize Apparatus and Prepare for Installation
DANGER: All apparatus must be de-energized during installation or removal of part(s). Inspect all parts for damage, rating, and compatibility with mating parts. Read all installation instructions completely before starting the procedure. Ensure all required tools are at hand and maintain cleanliness throughout the process.
- Remove Existing Livefront Terminator
Remove the rubber cap from the existing terminator. Cut off the connector at the top of the terminator. Disconnect the ground lead from the base of the terminator. Carefully remove the terminator housing from the cable.
- Prepare the Cable
Train the cable to be straight and in-line with the bushing centerline. Cut the cable to measure 10-1/2 inches from the bushing centerline. Remove 1-3/8 inches of cable insulation from the end of the cable, ensuring the cut is square and the conductor is not nicked. If the insulation shield measures less than 6-1/2 inches, proceed; otherwise, consult an ELASTIMOLD representative.
- Install the Compression Lug
Wire brush the bare aluminum conductor immediately. Install the compression lug, rotating it to spread the inhibitor. Position the compression lug so its contact threaded hole aligns with the bushing bore. Crimp the lug according to the crimp chart packaged with the lug, starting at the crimp line mark and rotating 180 degrees for each successive crimp. Carefully wipe any excessive inhibitor from the outside of the lug and cable.
- Assemble the Elbow Housing
Lubricate the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing with the supplied lubricant (DO NOT SUBSTITUTE). Slide the elbow connector onto the cable using a back-and-forth twisting motion. Wipe off all excess grease, ensuring no grease enters the gap between the lug and the insulation. Align the elbow with the compression lug’s threaded hole. Thread the probe into the lug by hand, taking care not to cross-thread, ensuring it turns freely for approximately four turns before becoming snug. Tighten the probe with the supplied wrench until the wrench bends.
- Connect the Concentric Neutral
Insert one end of a separate No. 14 AWG (2.5mm) copper wire or equivalent through the grounding eye on the elbow and twist it tight, taking care not to damage the eye. Twist all neutral wires together and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector, providing adequate slack in the wires for elbow operation. Add the hose clamp as shown in the instructions and tighten it snugly, but do not overtighten.
- Connect Elbow to Bushing Plug
Lubricate the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing with the supplied lubricant. WARNING: Lubricate only if the transformer and elbow are known to be de-energized. Securely fasten a hotstick to the loadbreak connector pulling eye. Place the elbow connector receptacle area over the bushing plug, inserting the elbow male contact (arc follower portion) into the bushing until the first slight resistance is felt (contacts approximately 2 inches apart). Immediately push the elbow home with a fast, firm, straight motion to engage the internal lock on the elbow and bushing interface. Apply sufficient force to ensure the internal lock engages. Do not hold in this position where only slight resistance is felt.
- Perform Voltage Test (168RLR Only)
Remove the test point cap with a hotstick, peeling it off at an angle rather than pulling directly in line. WARNING: The voltage test point is a capacitance device; do not use conventional voltage measuring equipment. Use a suitable sensing device designed for capacitive test points to determine if the cable is energized. Treat the elbow as energized until the 'no voltage' indication is confirmed by other means. After testing, clean and lubricate the inside surface of the cap with silicone grease and replace it on the test point.
