How to Install the K151SP Straight Plug

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for installing the K151SP Straight Plug, designed for connecting solid dielectric type cables to other ELASTIMOLD products on 15kV and 25kV class systems. Ensure all apparatus are de-energized during installation.

Estimated time: 1h 30m

Tools needed:

Cable cutting tool, Wire strippers, Wire brush, Crimping tool, Rag

Supplies needed:

K151SP Straight Plug kit (includes plug, contact, nylon rod, lubricant, plastic pin), Solid dielectric type cable, ELASTIMOLD bail, Copper wire (#14 AWG or equivalent), Silicone grease, Approved solvent

  1. Prepare the Cable Jacket and Shield

For Jacketed Concentric Neutral cable, cut and remove the cable jacket 8 inches from the cable end. Ensure sufficient concentric neutral wires are left for grounding. For Copper Tape Shield cable, cut and remove the cable jacket 7-1/2 inches from the cable end, then remove the copper tape shield 6-1/2 inches from the end. If using an ECS or MA grounding device, follow its specific instructions for outer jacket cut back.

  2. Prepare the Conductor

Remove 7/8 inch to 1 inch (or 1-3/4 inches to 1-7/8 inches for #1 stranded/compressed and #1/0 compressed/solid aluminum cable) of cable insulation and conductive shield. Cut squarely, do not pencil. Wire brush bare aluminum conductors and immediately insert them into the crimp barrel, which contains inhibitor.

  3. Crimp the Socket Terminal

Crimp the socket terminal onto the bared conductor, holding the crimp barrel against the cable insulation. Start crimps at the crimp line imprinted on the barrel and rotate each successive crimp or indent 90 degrees. Carefully wipe any excess inhibitor from the contact and cable insulation.

  4. Prepare Insulation and Clean

Temporarily remove the plastic pin. Remove the semi-conductive shield to a point 7-3/4 inches to 7-13/16 inches back from the end of the socket with a straight, smooth, squared cut; do not cut or nick the insulation. Replace the plastic pin. Pencil the insulation 1/8 inch. Clean the outer jacket and thoroughly clean the insulation to remove all traces of semi-conducting residue by wiping with a rag wet with an approved solvent. Always wipe from the end of the cable toward the outer jacket. If using an ECS or MA grounding device, install it now.

  5. Lubricate Cable and Position Collar

Slide the collar, smaller end first, onto each cable. Keep the cable insulation and plug clean. Apply the supplied lubricant sparingly to the cable as shown and to the inside of the housing. Do not substitute lubricants, as others may be harmful to the product.

  6. Install Plug onto Cable

Push the cable into the housing until the leading edge of the socket contact is flush with the front edge of the plug. Remove the plastic pin from the socket and discard it.

  7. Connect to Mating Receptacle

Lubricate the nose of the plug with silicone grease. Place the nylon rod into the receptacle face until it bottoms (approximately 1-3/4 inches), ensuring it is not cut during mating. Insert the plug assembly into the receptacle as far as possible. Pull out the nylon rod. Secure the electrical connection with an ELASTIMOLD bail, referencing the Bailing Instruction Sheet (150TB-4).

  8. Ground the Connector

If an ELASTIMOLD grounding device is not used, connect a length of #14 AWG (or equivalent) copper wire (customer supplied) through the grounding tab and twist tightly. Connect the grounding assembly of the connector to the system ground by merging it with the cable shield of each cable. Seal the grounding wires and connections to prevent corrosion.
