How to Install and Connect the 273RLR/274RLR Loadbreak Replacement Elbow Connector
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for safely installing and wiring the 273RLR or 274RLR Loadbreak Replacement Elbow Connector, converting a livefront termination to deadfront for UD cable.
Tools needed:
Probe Wrench, Wire brush, Hotstick, Suitable sensing device (for 274RLR voltage test)
Supplies needed:
Replacement Elbow Connector Housing, Compression Lug, Probe, Lubricant (supplied), Hose Clamp, Copper wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm), Silicone grease
- Prepare for Installation and Safety Checks
DANGER: Ensure all apparatus is de-energized before starting installation. Inspect all package contents for completeness and damage. Verify all components fit correctly with the cable and mating products. Check the probe threads by hand-threading into the compression lug; replace if resistance is encountered. Have all required tools ready and maintain cleanliness throughout the procedure.
- Remove Existing Livefront Terminator
DANGER: Confirm apparatus is de-energized. Remove the rubber cap from the existing terminator. Cut off the connector at the top of the terminator. Disconnect the ground lead from the base of the terminator. Carefully remove the terminator housing from the cable.
- Prepare the Cable
Train the cables to be straight and in-line with the bushing centerline. Measure and cut the cable to 10-1/2 inches from the bushing centerline. If the insulation shield measures less than 6-1/2 inches, proceed. If greater, consult an ELASTIMOLD representative. Remove 1-3/8 inches of cable insulation from the end, cutting squarely. DO NOT NICK THE CONDUCTOR.
- Install the Compression Lug
Wire brush the bare aluminum conductor thoroughly. Immediately install the compression lug, rotating it to spread the inhibitor. Position the lug so its contact threaded hole aligns with the bushing bore. Crimp the lug according to the crimp chart, starting at the crimp line mark and rotating 180 degrees for each successive crimp. Carefully wipe off any excessive inhibitor from the outside of the lug and cable.
- Assemble the Elbow Housing
Lubricate the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing with the supplied lubricant; do not substitute. Keep the insulation clean. Slide the elbow connector onto the cable using a back-and-forth twisting motion. Wipe off all excess grease. Align the elbow with the compression lug’s threaded hole. Thread the probe into the lug by hand, ensuring it turns freely for about four turns before becoming snug. Tighten with the probe wrench until the wrench bends.
- Connect the Concentric Neutral
Insert one end of a separate copper wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm or equivalent) through the grounding eye on the elbow and twist it tight, taking care not to damage the eye. Twist all neutral wires together and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector. Ensure adequate slack in the wires for elbow operation. Add the supplied hose clamp as shown and tighten it snugly, but do not overtighten.
- Connect the Elbow to the Bushing Plug
Lubricate the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing with the supplied lubricant. This lubrication step MUST ONLY be performed if both the transformer and elbow are known to be de-energized. Once lubricated, the elbow can be operated per operating instructions, but DO NOT OPERATE BY HAND.
- Perform Voltage Test (274RLR Only)
For 274RLR models, remove the test point cap with a hotstick, peeling it off at an angle. WARNING: This is a capacitance device; do not use conventional voltage measuring equipment. Use a suitable sensing device designed for capacitive test points. Treat the elbow as energized until a "no voltage" indication is confirmed by other means. After testing, clean and lubricate the inside of the cap with silicone grease and replace it on the test point.
