How to Install 162LR Loadbreak Elbow Connectors

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe and proper installation of the 162LR Loadbreak Elbow Connector on various types of UD cables, including initial preparation, assembly, and connection.

Estimated time: 1h 30m

Tools needed:

Wire brush, Crimp tool, Probe wrench, Hotstick, Cable cutting tool, Wire strippers

Supplies needed:

Elbow Connector Housing, Compression Lug, Probe, Lubricant (Do Not Substitute), Copper wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm or equivalent), Appropriate connector (for neutral to ground), Vinyl tape (if applicable), Cold shrink tube (if using sealing kit), Conductive copper tape (if using sealing kit), HV insulated cap(s) or connector(s) (if replacing shipping covers)

  1. Perform Initial Inspection and Safety Checks

Check package contents for completeness and damage. Inspect all components for proper fit with cable and mating products. Thread the probe into the compression lug to check for resistance; replace damaged components if resistance is encountered. DANGER: Ensure all apparatus is de-energized before starting installation. This product must be installed by competent personnel trained in high voltage safety practices.

  2. Prepare the Cable for Training and Shielding

Train the cable to ensure adequate slack for operation. Determine the cable type (e.g., non-jacketed concentric neutral, jacketed concentric neutral, jacketed with drain wires, or jacketed copper tape shield) and follow the specific preparation instructions for neutral wires, outer jacket, and shield removal as detailed in the documentation. Cut the excess cable squarely at the centerline of the bushing. If using a sealing kit, slide the cold shrink tube onto the cable loose end first.

  3. Prepare Cable End and Install Compression Lug

Remove the insulation shield and insulation 2-1/8 inches (55mm) from the cable end, cutting squarely and taking care not to nick the conductor. Wire brush bare aluminum conductors thoroughly. Immediately install the compression lug, rotating it to spread the inhibitor. Position the lug so the contact threaded hole aligns with the bushing bore. Crimp the lug according to the crimp chart supplied with the lug, starting at the crimp line mark and rotating 180 degrees for each successive crimp. Carefully wipe any excess inhibitor from the outside of the lug and cable.

  4. Complete Cable Insulation Preparation

Remove the insulation shield as shown in the diagram (6-7/8 inches / 175mm back from the lug end). Bevel the insulation end a maximum of 1/8 inch (5mm). Thoroughly clean the insulation to remove all traces of dirt or excess inhibitor.

  5. Assemble the Elbow Connector

Lubricate the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing with the supplied lubricant. DO NOT SUBSTITUTE other lubricants. Slide the elbow connector onto the cable using a back-and-forth twisting motion. Wipe off all excess lubricant. Align the elbow with the compression lug's threaded hole. Thread the probe into the lug by hand, ensuring it turns freely for approximately four turns before becoming snug. Tighten the probe with the supplied probe wrench until the wrench bends.

  6. Ground the Elbow

Insert one end of a separate copper wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm or equivalent) through the grounding eye on the elbow. Twist the wire tightly, taking care not to damage the eye. Twist all neutral wires together and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector, ensuring adequate slack for elbow operation. If using a cold shrink grounding kit, refer to its specific instructions.

  7. Connect Elbow to Bushing Plug

DANGER: Confirm that both the transformer and the elbow are de-energized before proceeding. Lubricate the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing with the supplied lubricant. Securely fasten a hotstick to the loadbreak connector pulling eye. Insert the probe tip approximately 2 inches (50mm) into the bushing. Immediately push the elbow home with a fast, firm, straight motion, using sufficient force to engage the internal lock on the elbow connector and bushing interface. DO NOT OPERATE BY HAND.
