How to Install the K151SP Straight Plug
This guide provides detailed instructions for installing the K151SP Straight Plug on solid dielectric type cable for 15kV and 25kV class systems. It covers cable preparation, crimping, and connection to a mating receptacle.
Estimated time: 1h
Tools needed:
Wire strippers/Cable knife, Wire brush, Crimp tool, Rag
Supplies needed:
K151SP Straight Plug, Conductor Contact (female), Nylon Venting Rod, Lubricant (supplied with product), Approved solvent, ELASTIMOLD bail (if required for mating product), #14 AWG copper wire (for grounding), Mating receptacle
- De-energize Apparatus and Inspect Components
DANGER: Ensure all apparatus is de-energized before beginning installation or removal of any parts. Verify that all components are complete, undamaged, and compatible with the cable and mating products. This installation must only be performed by competent personnel trained in high voltage electrical equipment safety practices.
- Prepare Cable Jacket
Choose the appropriate method for your cable type. For Jacketed Concentric Neutral cable, cut and remove the cable jacket 8 inches from the cable end, ensuring sufficient concentric neutral wires for grounding. For Copper Tape Shield cable, cut and remove the cable jacket 7-1/2 inches from the cable end, then remove the copper tape shield 6-1/2 inches from the cable end. *If using an ECS or MA grounding device, follow its specific instructions for outer jacket cut back.*
- Prepare Cable Insulation and Conductive Shield
Remove 7/8 to 1 inch of cable insulation and conductive shield. For #1 stranded/compressed and #1/0 compressed/solid aluminum cable, remove 1-3/4 to 1-7/8 inches. Cut squarely; do not pencil the cut. Wire brush bare aluminum conductors immediately before proceeding.
- Crimp Socket Terminal
Insert the bared conductor into the crimp barrel, which contains inhibitor. Hold the crimp barrel against the cable insulation and crimp the socket terminal. Refer to the crimp chart provided with the contact. Start crimps at the imprinted crimp line and rotate each successive crimp 90 degrees. Carefully wipe any excess inhibitor from the contact and cable insulation.
- Prepare Semi-Conductive Shield and Insulation
Temporarily remove the plastic pin from the socket. Remove the semi-conductive shield to a point 7-3/4 to 7-13/16 inches back from the end of the socket with a straight, smooth, squared cut. DO NOT cut or nick the insulation. Replace the plastic pin. Pencil the insulation 1/8 inch. Clean the outer jacket and thoroughly clean the insulation with an approved solvent, wiping from the cable end toward the outer jacket, to remove all traces of semi-conducting residue. *If using an ECS or MA grounding device, install it now following its instructions.*
- Lubricate Cable and Position Collar
Slide the collar, smaller end first, onto the cable. Keep the cable insulation and plug clean. Apply the supplied lubricant sparingly to the cable as shown in the diagram and to the inside of the housing. DO NOT substitute lubricants, as others may harm the product or its mating part.
- Install Plug Housing onto Cable
Push the cable into the housing until the leading edge of the socket contact is flush with the front edge of the plug. Remove the plastic pin from the socket and discard it.
- Connect to Mating Receptacle
Lubricate the nose of the plug with silicone grease. Place the nylon rod into the receptacle face until it bottoms (approximately 1-3/4 inches), taking care not to cut the rod. Insert the plug assembly into the receptacle as far as possible. Pull out and remove the nylon rod. Secure the electrical connection using an ELASTIMOLD bail; refer to the Bailing Instruction Sheet (150TB-4). CAUTION: A bailing arrangement is required when this product is used with any mating Elastimold deadbreak product.
- Connect System Ground (Optional)
If an ELASTIMOLD grounding device is not being used, connect a length of customer-supplied #14 AWG (or equivalent) copper wire through the grounding tab and twist tightly. Connect this grounding assembly to the system ground by merging it with the cable shield of each cable. Seal all grounding wires and connections to prevent corrosion.
