How to Install the K151SP Straight Plug

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for installing the K151SP Straight Plug on solid dielectric type cables for 15kV and 25kV class systems, including cable preparation, crimping, and connection to a mating receptacle.

Estimated time: 1h 30m

Tools needed:

Cable cutter, Wire strippers, Crimp tool, Wire brush, Rag, Approved solvent

Supplies needed:

K151SP Straight Plug kit (includes Conductor Contact, Nylon Venting Rod, Lubricant), Mating ELASTIMOLD receptacle (e.g., K151SR, K150T, K150DR, 156LR), ELASTIMOLD bail, #14 AWG copper wire (optional, for grounding), Silicone grease

  1. Ensure Safety and Prepare Cable Jacket

DANGER: All apparatus must be de-energized during installation or removal of parts. This product should be installed only by competent personnel trained in good safety practices involving high voltage electrical equipment. Inspect all parts for damage, rating, and compatibility with mating parts. For jacketed concentric neutral cables, cut and remove the cable jacket 8 inches from the cable end, ensuring sufficient concentric neutral wires for grounding. For copper tape shield cables, cut and remove the cable jacket 7-1/2 inches from the cable end, then remove the copper tape shield 6-1/2 inches from the end of the cable. If using an ECS or MA grounding device, follow its specific instructions for outer jacket cut back.

  2. Prepare Cable Insulation and Conductors

Remove 7/8 to 1 inch (or 1-3/4 to 1-7/8 inches for #1 stranded/compressed and #1/0 compressed/solid aluminum cable) of cable insulation and conductive shield. Cut squarely; do not pencil the cut. Wire brush bare aluminum conductors immediately and insert them into the crimp barrel, which contains inhibitor.

  3. Crimp the Socket Terminal

Crimp the socket terminal onto the bared conductor, holding the crimp barrel against the cable insulation. Refer to the crimp chart packed with the contact for specific instructions. Start the crimps at the crimp line imprinted on the crimp barrel and rotate each successive crimp or indent 90 degrees. Carefully wipe any excess inhibitor from the contact and cable insulation.

  4. Remove Semi-Conductive Shield and Clean Insulation

Temporarily remove the plastic pin. Remove the semi-conductive shield to a point 7-3/4 to 7-13/16 inches back from the end of the socket with a straight, smooth, squared cut. DO NOT cut or nick the insulation. Replace the plastic pin. Pencil the insulation 1/8 inch. Clean the outer jacket and thoroughly clean the insulation to remove all traces of semi-conducting residue by wiping with a rag wet with an approved solvent. Always wipe from the end of the cable toward the outer jacket. If using an ECS or MA grounding device, install it following its appropriate instructions.

  5. Lubricate Cable and Plug Housing

Slide the collar, smaller end first, onto each cable. Refer to the bailing instruction sheet. Keep the cable insulation and plug clean. Apply the supplied lubricant sparingly to the cable as shown and to the inside of the housing. DO NOT SUBSTITUTE other lubricants, as they may be harmful to this product or its mating product.

  6. Install Cable into Plug Housing

Push the cable into the housing until the leading edge of the socket contact is flush with the front edge of the plug. Remove the plastic pin from the socket and discard it.

  7. Connect Plug to Mating Receptacle

Lubricate the nose of the plug with silicone grease. Place the nylon rod into the receptacle face until it bottoms (approximately 1-3/4 inches), taking care not to cut the rod. Insert the plug assembly into the receptacle as far as possible. Pull out the nylon rod. Secure the electrical connection with an ELASTIMOLD bail; refer to Bailing Instruction Sheet (150TB-4).

  8. Complete Grounding Connection

If an ELASTIMOLD grounding device is not being used, connect a length of #14 AWG (or equivalent) customer-supplied copper wire through the grounding tab and twist tightly. Connect the grounding assembly of the connector to the system ground by merging it with the cable shield of each cable. Seal the grounding wires and connections to prevent corrosion.
