Overview

The ABB 167RLR-F-5240 is a 200 Amp, 15kV loadbreak replacement elbow connector designed for medium-voltage cable systems requiring safe, reliable loadbreak operations. This elbow connector accommodates cable insulation diameters from 0.640 inch to 0.820 inch and supports conductor sizes ranging from 1/0 to 2/0 AWG compressed stranded or solid, as well as 53.49 mm². The unit features a bi-metal compression lug for secure conductor termination and includes the 00400X long bi-metal contact for extended electrical contact area. A key advantage of the 167RLR-F-5240 is its extended length contact and elbow housing, which provides an additional 8-7/8 inches in overall length. This design improves installation flexibility in tight spaces and enhances mechanical durability during repeated loadbreak operations. The elbow does not include a test point, making it suitable for applications where test point access is not required or where space constraints prevent its use.

How to Install Elastimold 167RLR/168RLR Loadbreak Replacement Elbow Connectors

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe installation and initial setup of Elastimold 167RLR (without Test Point) and 168RLR (with Test Point) Loadbreak Replacement Elbow Connectors, converting livefront terminations to deadfront for UD cable.

Estimated time: 1h 30m

Tools needed:

Probe Wrench, Wire brush, Crimp tool, Hotstick, Suitable sensing device (for 168RLR)

Supplies needed:

Replacement Elbow Connector Housing, Compression Lug, Probe, Lubricant (supplied, Do Not Substitute), Hose Clamp, Copper wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm or equivalent), Silicone grease (for 168RLR test point cap)

  1. De-energize Apparatus and Perform Initial Checks

Before starting, ensure all apparatus is de-energized. Verify the package contents are complete and undamaged. Check all components for proper fit with the cable and mating products. Thread the probe into the compression lug to check for resistance; replace damaged components if resistance is encountered. Read all instructions and gather required tools.

  2. Remove Existing Livefront Termination

Remove the rubber cap from the existing terminator. Cut off the connector at the top of the terminator. Disconnect the ground lead from the base of the terminator. Finally, remove the terminator housing from the cable.

  3. Prepare the Cable

Train the cable to be straight and in-line with the bushing centerline. Cut the cable to measure 10-1/2 inches from the bushing centerline. If the insulation shield measures less than 6-1/2 inches from the end of the cut cable, proceed. If it's greater, consult an ELASTIMOLD representative. Remove 1-3/8 inches of cable insulation from the end, ensuring not to nick the conductor.

  4. Install the Compression Lug

Wire brush the bare aluminum conductor immediately. Install the compression lug, rotating it to spread the inhibitor. Align the compression lug so the contact threaded hole aligns with the bushing bore. Refer to the crimp chart supplied with the lug for crimping information. Start crimping at the crimp line mark, rotating 180 degrees for each successive crimp. Carefully wipe any excessive inhibitor from the outside of the lug and cable.

  5. Assemble the Elbow Housing

Lubricate the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing with the supplied lubricant; do not substitute. Slide the elbow connector onto the cable using a back and forth twisting motion. Wipe off all excess grease. Align the elbow with the compression lug's threaded hole. Thread the probe into the lug by hand, ensuring it turns freely for approximately four turns before becoming snug. Tighten the probe with the wrench until the wrench bends.

  6. Connect the Concentric Neutral

Insert one end of a separate copper wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm or equivalent) through the grounding eye on the elbow and twist it tight, taking care not to damage the eye. Twist all neutral wires together and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector, providing adequate slack for elbow operation. Add the supplied hose clamp as shown in the diagram and tighten it snugly, but do not overtighten.

  7. Connect the Elbow to the Bushing Plug

Lubricate the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing with the supplied lubricant. IMPORTANT: Only lubricate if the transformer and elbow are known to be de-energized. Securely fasten a hotstick to the loadbreak connector pulling eye. Place the elbow connector receptacle area over the bushing plug, inserting the elbow male contact into the bushing until slight resistance is felt. Immediately push the elbow home with a fast, firm, straight motion to engage the internal lock.

  8. Perform Voltage Test (168RLR ONLY)

For 168RLR models, remove the test point cap with a hotstick, peeling it off at an angle. WARNING: The voltage test point is a capacitance device and not directly connected to the conductor. Do not use conventional voltage measuring equipment. Use a suitable sensing device designed for capacitive test points and follow its manufacturer's directions. Treat the elbow as energized until the 'no voltage' indication is confirmed by other means. After testing, clean and lubricate the inside surface of the cap with silicone grease and replace it tightly on the test point.
