How to Crimp Terminals and Verify Calibration with the ERG4004 Tool
A comprehensive guide for using the ERG4004 COMFORT CRIMP® tool to properly crimp AB & C-Flag terminals and non-insulated terminals, disconnects, and splices, including instructions for gaging verification to ensure proper tool performance.
Estimated time: 20m
Tools needed:
Gage pins
Supplies needed:
AB & C-Flag Terminals, Non-Insulated Terminals, Disconnects, and Splices, Stripped electrical wire
- Open Tool and Select Nest
Open the ERG4004 tool handles fully. Identify the correct crimping nest for your terminal and wire gauge (e.g., AB nest for 22-18 AWG, C nest for 12-10 AWG). Refer to Figures 2 and 3 in the tool's manual for specific terminal types (AB Flag, C Flag, Non-Insulated).
- Insert Terminal into Nest
Insert the terminal into the selected nest. For AB Flag terminals, place the barrel downward and the tongue pointing rearward in the forward nest. For C Flag terminals, place the barrel downward and the tongue pointing forward in the rear nest. For non-insulated terminals, disconnects, or splices, ensure the barrel seam or splice window faces the indentor.
- Secure Terminal and Insert Wire
Close the tool handles slightly to hold the terminal securely in the nest without deforming it. Carefully insert the stripped end of your electrical wire completely into the terminal barrel.
- Complete the Crimp
Close the tool handles firmly and completely until the SHURE STAKE® mechanism cycles, indicating a finished crimp. For larger wire and terminal combinations that require more force, press the CRIMP ASSIST™ foot against a flat work surface (e.g., worktable, floor) for increased leverage.
- Safety Precaution During Crimping
Always ensure the tool handles are non-insulating. Never crimp on hot energized wires. Keep all body parts away from the die nest during any crimping procedure.
- Prepare for Gaging Verification
Wipe the die nest clean of any dust, moisture, or other contaminants using a clean brush or a soft, lint-free cloth. Swing the locator away from the nests to allow for the insertion of gage pins.
- Engage SHURE STAKE® Mechanism for Gaging
Close the tool handles until the SHURE STAKE® mechanism just trips. This sets the tool in the correct position for gaging.
- Verify Nest Gaging Requirements
Using appropriate gage pins, insert them into each nest (A, B, and C) and ensure that the gaging requirements specified in Table 1 of the manual are met (e.g., .062 – .067 for #22 – #18 AWG in A, B nests; .112 – .117 for #12 – #10 AWG in C nest). Perform this procedure whenever damage is suspected or as operational conditions warrant.
- Safety Precaution During Gaging
Keep all body parts away from the die nest during the gaging procedure to prevent injury.
