This guide provides step-by-step instructions for safely and effectively crimping non-insulated terminals, disconnects, and splices ranging from 16 to 6 AWG using the ERG4005 COMFORT CRIMP® tool. It also covers basic maintenance and gaging verification.
Estimated time: 15m
Tools needed:
Wire strippers, Gage pins
Supplies needed:
Non-insulated terminals, Non-insulated disconnects, Non-insulated splices, Electrical wire (16-6 AWG), SAE No. 20 motor oil
- Prepare for Crimping and Observe Safety Warnings
Before operating the ERG4005 tool, read and understand all instructions. Ensure the work area is clear. Always remember that the tool handles are non-insulating; never crimp on hot energized wires. Keep all body parts away from the die nest during any crimping procedure.
- Crimp a Non-Insulated Terminal or Disconnect
Fully open the tool handles. Insert the non-insulated terminal or disconnect into the appropriate nest (16-14 AWG to B, 12-10 AWG to C, 8-6 AWG to D-E) with the terminal barrel seam facing the indentor. Close the handles slightly to secure the terminal without deforming it. Insert the stripped wire into the terminal barrel. Close the handles completely until the SHURE STAKE® mechanism cycle has finished, ensuring a secure crimp. For larger wire/terminal combinations, use the Crimp Assist™ foot against a flat surface for leverage.
- Crimp a Non-Insulated Splice
Fully open the tool handles. For splices, which require two crimps, position one end of the splice into the proper nest (16-14 AWG to B, 12-10 AWG to C, 8-6 AWG to D-E) with the window facing the indentor. Close the handles slightly to secure the splice without deforming it. Insert the stripped wire into the splice barrel. Close the handles completely until the SHURE STAKE® mechanism cycle has finished. Repeat this process for the opposite end of the splice to complete the connection.
- Perform Routine Tool Maintenance
After use, clean the tool by removing dust, moisture, and other contaminants with a clean brush or a soft, lint-free cloth. Do not use the tool on objects that could cause damage. Apply a thin coat of SAE No. 20 motor oil to all pins, pivot points, and bearing surfaces, avoiding excessive oiling. Keep the handles closed when not in use to prevent foreign objects from lodging in the dies. Store the tool in a cool, dry area.
- Verify Gaging and Calibration (Optional)
Periodically inspect the tool for cracks, sharp edges, or other imperfections, ensuring the nest area is free of burrs, dents, or scratches. To verify gaging, wipe the die nest clean. Swing the locator away from the nests. Close the handles until the SHURE STAKE® mechanism just trips. Using appropriate gage pins, confirm that each nest meets the specified gaging requirements listed in Table 1 of the manual. Perform this procedure whenever damage is suspected or operational conditions warrant.
