Overview

The ABB ERG4006 is a precision-engineered ergonomic hand tool designed for crimping Sta-Kon® insulated RA and RB .110 disconnects (22-14 AWG) and RZ insulated terminals (26-22 AWG) on copper wire. This Comfort Crimp® compression tool features an overmolded soft grip for reduced operator fatigue during repetitive tasks, making it ideal for electrical assembly, maintenance, and production environments. The tool incorporates a Shure Stake® release lever for quick die changes and a crimp assist foot for stable positioning, ensuring consistent, high-quality terminations. The ERG4006 includes dedicated nests for RA (22-18 AWG), RB (16-14 AWG), and RZ (26-22 AWG) terminals, eliminating guesswork in tool setup. With a compact 3.71-inch length and 10.46-inch handle span, it fits comfortably in hand while providing the leverage needed for precise crimps. The non-insulating handles require strict adherence to safety protocols—never crimp energized wires. Engineered for daily use in industrial and commercial electrical applications, this tool delivers reliable performance for terminating common insulated connectors found in control panels, machinery wiring, and building infrastructure. The ERG4006 is part of ABB’s Installation Products line, optimized for professionals who demand accuracy and comfort in wire termination tasks.

How to Perform Calibration and Gaging Verification on the ERG4006 Compression Tool

This guide details the steps for verifying the calibration and gaging of your ERG4006 Comfort Crimp® Compression Tool with Shure Stake® Mechanism.

Estimated time: 15m

Tools needed:

SAE No. 20 motor oil, Gage pins

  1. Perform Visual Inspection

Visually inspect the tool for cracks, sharp edges, or any other imperfections that may affect performance. Ensure the nest area is free of burrs, dents, or scratches.

  2. Prepare the Tool for Gaging

Ensure all pins, pivot points, and bearing surfaces are protected with a thin coat of SAE No. 20 motor oil. Do not oil excessively. Wipe the die nest clean before gaging.

  3. Perform Gaging Procedure

Swing the locator away from the nests. Close the handles until the SHURE STAKE® mechanism just trips. Using gage pins, ensure that each nest meets the gaging requirements as specified in the relevant table for your ERG4006 model.

  4. Verify SHURE STAKE® Mechanism Release Force

Squeeze the handles until the jaws are fully closed but before the SHURE STAKE® mechanism releases. Apply force gradually at 1-1/2 inches from the end of the handles until the SHURE STAKE® mechanism releases. The force required should be a minimum of 27 lbs and a maximum of 37 lbs.
