How to Use, Maintain, and Calibrate the ERG4002 COMFORT CRIMP® Compression Tool

This guide provides instructions for safely operating the ERG4002 COMFORT CRIMP® tool to install non-insulated terminals, disconnects, and splices, along with maintenance procedures and gaging verification steps.

Estimated time: 15m

Tools needed:

ERG4002 COMFORT CRIMP® Compression Tool, Gage pins, Clean brush, Soft, lint-free cloth

Supplies needed:

Non-insulated terminals (22-10 AWG), Non-insulated disconnects (22-10 AWG), Non-insulated splices (22-10 AWG), Stripped wire, SAE No. 20 motor oil

  1. Review Safety Warnings and Inspect Tool

Before operating, read and understand all safety information. WARNING: Handles are non-insulating; do not crimp on hot energized wires. WARNING: Keep all body parts away from the die nest during gaging or crimping. Visually inspect the tool for cracks, sharp edges, or imperfections. Ensure the nest area is free of burrs, dents, or scratches.

  2. Crimp Non-Insulated Terminals or Disconnects

Open handles fully. Insert the terminal into the proper nest (A for 22-18 AWG, B for 16-14 AWG, C for 12-10 AWG) with the barrel seam facing the indenter. Close handles slightly to secure the terminal without deforming it. Insert the stripped wire. Close handles until the SHURE STAKE® mechanism cycle has been completed.

  3. Crimp Non-Insulated Splices

Open handles fully. Position the splice in the proper nest (A, B, or C) with the window facing the indenter. Close handles slightly to secure the splice without deforming it. Insert the stripped wire into one end. Close handles until the SHURE STAKE® mechanism cycle has been completed. Repeat these steps for the opposite end of the splice.

  4. Utilize Crimp Assist™ Foot for Increased Leverage

For larger wire and terminal combinations requiring more force, place the CRIMP ASSIST™ foot flat on a work surface (e.g., worktable, floor) and press the tool against it to gain additional leverage during the crimping process.

  5. Perform Routine Tool Maintenance

Remove dust, moisture, and contaminants with a clean brush or soft, lint-free cloth. Do not use on objects that could damage the tool. Apply a thin coat of SAE No. 20 motor oil to all pins, pivot points, and bearing surfaces; do not oil excessively. Keep handles closed when not in use to prevent objects from lodging in the dies. Store the tool in a cool, dry area.

  6. Verify Gaging Requirements (Calibration)

Wipe the die nest clean. Swing the locator away from the nests. Close the handles until the SHURE STAKE® mechanism just trips. Using appropriate gage pins, ensure each nest (A: .062-.067, B: .084-.089, C: .110-.115) meets the specified gaging requirements from Table 1. Perform this procedure whenever damage is suspected or as often as conditions warrant.

  7. Release SHURE STAKE® Mechanism (If Needed)

In the event the SHURE STAKE® mechanism must be released before a full cycle, push up on the release bar until the ratchet teeth are disengaged.
