How to Install the 755/775DLR Direct Test Elbow Connector
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe and proper installation of the 755/775DLR Direct Test Elbow Connector, including cable preparation, component assembly, and grounding procedures for high voltage apparatus.
Estimated time: 1h 30m
Tools needed:
Wire strippers, Crimping tool, Torque wrench, Wire brush (for aluminum conductor)
Supplies needed:
755/775DLR Elbow Connector, Cable Adapter, Compression Lug, Insulating Plug with Cap, Lubricant, Stud Prepack, Vinyl plastic tape, Tape retainer, Tape marker, Grounding wire (No. 14 AWG copper or equivalent), Suitable grounding connector, Waterproofing material
- Perform Initial Safety Checks and Prepare Components
DANGER: All apparatus must be de-energized during installation or removal of parts. Inspect all parts for damage, proper rating, and compatibility with mating parts. Check the package contents to ensure they are complete and undamaged. Have all required tools at hand and maintain cleanliness throughout the procedure.
- Position and Cut the Cable
Position the cable in its final assembled location, ensuring enough slack for elbow removal. For concentric neutral cable, unwind the concentric neutral wires. Cut the cable 1-3/4 inches (45mm) from the centerline of the mating product.
- Clean the Cable Outer Surface
Clean the outer surface of the cable for a distance of 24 inches (610mm) or up to the bent-back concentric neutral wires.
- Prepare the Cable Jacket and Shield
Remove the outer jacket to 13-5/8 inches (340mm). Fold back shield wires. If using flat metallic tape shield, remove it and secure with vinyl plastic tape to 11-5/8 inches (295mm). For fabric tape shield, remove it and install a tape retainer and tape marker to 10-5/8 inches (270mm) and 11-5/8 inches (295mm) respectively. For longitudinally corrugated shield, remove it and install a tape marker flush with 11-5/8 inches (295mm). For semi-con shield, remove it and install a tape marker to 10-5/8 inches (270mm) and 11-5/8 inches (295mm), ensuring not to cut or nick the cable insulation. Refer to 10TL adapter instructions for UNISHIELD or lead sheath cables.
- Install the Cable Adapter
Bevel the end of the cable insulation at a 45-degree angle, approximately 1/4 inch (6mm) back. Thoroughly clean and then lubricate the cable insulation, working towards the semi-con shield. Install the cable adapter, small end first, until it is flush with the edge of the tape marker.
- Prepare the Conductor
Remove the protruding cable insulation by cutting it even with the end of the cable adapter. Do not cut or nick the cable adapter or the conductor. Verify the exposed conductor length is between 4-5/8 inches (117mm) to 5 inches (127mm); otherwise, redo the assembly.
- Crimp the Compression Lug
Fully insert the conductor into the compression lug. If using an aluminum conductor, wire brush it immediately before insertion. Measure the 'Check Dimension' before crimping (should be less than 6-7/8 inches / 175mm). Crimp the compression lug following its supplied instructions. Wipe all excess inhibitor from the lug and cable adapter. Verify the distance from the end of the lug to the cable adapter is between 6-7/8 inches to 7-5/8 inches (175mm-194mm) after crimping; otherwise, redo the assembly.
- Install the Elbow
Lubricate the cable adapter and the inside of the elbow cable entrance. Install the elbow onto the cable adapter until it cannot advance further. Ensure the cable adapter remains flush with the tape marker. If not, reposition the cable adapter. Remove the tape marker.
- Prepare Mating Products
DANGER: Do not connect or disconnect mating products while energized. Do not energize while disconnected. Remove protective caps from the elbow and the mating part. Hand tighten the threaded stud (supplied with the elbow) into the mating part if it is not already equipped with one. Clean and lubricate both the elbow and the mating part with the supplied lubricant, keeping surfaces clean.
- Connect Elbow to Mating Part
Push the elbow onto the mating part, carefully lining up the hole in the compression lug with the stud on the mating part.
- Connect Opposite Mating Part (if applicable)
Clean and lubricate the mating part for the opposite end of the elbow. Insert this mating part into the elbow, engage the threads, and hand tighten. Torque the mating part according to the instructions supplied with that specific mating part.
- Install Insulating Plug and Cap (if applicable)
If an insulating plug is used as a mating part, clean and lubricate the inner surface of the voltage detection cap. Place the cap on the elbow and push down hard until it snaps into place.
- Ground Cable Shield and Waterproof Jacket
Insert one end of a piece of wire (at least equivalent to No. 14 AWG copper) through the grounding eye and twist to make a small loop, ensuring not to damage the eye. Connect this wire to ground using a suitable connector. The cable shield must be grounded according to the instructions supplied with the grounding device, or via an alternate method if no device is used. It is also recommended to waterproof the cable jacket at this point to prevent moisture from entering the cable.
