How to Install 161LR/162LR Loadbreak Elbow Connectors
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe installation and assembly of 161LR and 162LR Loadbreak Elbow Connectors, designed to terminate various UD cables and connect to 15kV class loadbreak bushings.
Estimated time: 1h
Tools needed:
Probe Wrench, Wire brush, Crimp tool, Hotstick
Supplies needed:
Lubricant (Do Not Substitute), Copper wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm) or equivalent, Appropriate connector (for neutral/ground), Vinyl tape, Conductive copper tape, Cold shrink tube (if using sealing kits)
- Perform Initial Safety Checks and Component Verification
DANGER: Ensure all apparatus is de-energized before beginning installation. Inspect the package contents for completeness and damage. Verify all components, including the elbow housing, compression lug, and probe, are compatible with your cable and mating products. Thread the probe into the compression lug by hand to check for smooth operation and any damage. Gather all required tools and maintain a clean work area.
- Train Cable and Prepare Neutral/Ground Wires
Train the cable to ensure 24 to 36 inches (610 to 914mm) of slack beyond the bushing centerline for ease of operation. For concentric neutral cables, pull extra cable and bind the neutrals 7-3/4 to 8 inches (195 to 203mm) back from the bushing center, or connect neutral wires to tank ground using a jumper or braid. Unwrap neutral wires to the binding. For jacketed cables with drain wires, unwrap and fold them back, securing with vinyl tape. For copper tape shield cables, remove 7-1/8 inches (180mm) of the copper tape shield and wrap conductive copper tape over the end.
- Prepare Cable End and Install Compression Lug
Cut the cable squarely at the centerline of the bushing. Remove 9-5/8 inches (240mm) of the outer jacket (if applicable). Remove the insulation shield and insulation 2-1/8 inches (55mm) from the cable end, cutting squarely without nicking the conductor. Wire brush bare aluminum conductors immediately. Install the compression lug, rotating to spread inhibitor, and align its threaded hole with the bushing bore. Crimp the lug according to the crimp chart, starting at the crimp line mark and rotating 180 degrees for each successive crimp. Wipe off excess inhibitor.
- Final Insulation Preparation and Cleaning
Remove the insulation shield 6-7/8 inches (175mm) from the cable end. Bevel the insulation end a maximum of 1/8 inch (5mm). Ensure the insulation cut is straight, smooth, and squared, taking care not to cut or nick the insulation. Thoroughly clean the insulation to remove all traces of dirt or excess inhibitor, ensuring a pristine surface for the elbow assembly.
- Assemble Elbow Connector
Lubricate the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing with the supplied lubricant. DO NOT SUBSTITUTE. Slide the elbow connector onto the cable using a back-and-forth twisting motion. Wipe off all excess lubricant. Align the elbow with the compression lug's threaded hole. Thread the probe into the lug by hand, ensuring it turns freely for approximately four turns before becoming snug. Tighten the probe with the supplied wrench until the wrench bends, indicating proper torque.
- Ground the Elbow Connector
Insert one end of a separate copper wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm or equivalent) through the grounding eye on the elbow. Twist the wire tightly, taking care not to damage the eye. If the elbow is preordered with a ground wire, proceed to connect all neutral wires to ground using an appropriate connector, ensuring adequate slack for elbow operation. If using a cold shrink grounding kit, refer to its specific instructions.
- Connect Elbow to Bushing Plug
CONFIRM THAT THE TRANSFORMER AND ELBOW ARE DE-ENERGIZED. Lubricate the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing with the supplied lubricant. Securely fasten a hotstick to the loadbreak connector pulling eye. Insert the probe tip approximately 2 inches (50mm) into the bushing, then immediately push the elbow home with a fast, firm, straight motion. Use sufficient force to engage the internal lock on the elbow connector and bushing interface. DO NOT OPERATE BY HAND.
