Overview

ABB Installation Products K656SR-H5270 is a 600 Amp, 15/25 kV DeadBreak straight receptacle engineered for medium-voltage cable connections in industrial and utility applications. This component features a bi-metal compression lug rated for compressed stranded 4/0 or kcmil solid compact conductors (250 mm² or 126.67 mm²), ensuring reliable electrical continuity and mechanical strength. The cable insulation diameter range of 0.850 inch to 1.050 inch accommodates standard medium-voltage cable sizes, while the integrated retaining ring secures the cable adapter for vibration resistance and pull-out protection. The capacitive test point enables safe, non-intrusive voltage verification without de-energizing the system, reducing downtime during maintenance or testing procedures. This DeadBreak design eliminates the need for load interruption during installation or removal, enhancing operational safety and efficiency. The fully shielded, fully submersible molded rubber housing is constructed with 100% peroxide-cured EPDM materials for superior durability and environmental resistance. Typical applications include switchgear, transformers, motor control centers, and underground distribution systems where medium-voltage power delivery requires robust, field-proven connectors. The bi-metal compression lug provides superior corrosion resistance and long-term conductivity, while the compact footprint of the K656SR series optimizes panel space in densely packed electrical enclosures. The product meets ANSI/IEEE Standard 386 for 15kV and 25kV voltage classes, with ratings including 8.3kV max phase-to-ground, 14.4kV max phase-to-phase, 95kV BIL impulse withstand, and 600 Amp continuous current. For 25kV class, it supports 16.2kV max phase-to-ground, 28kV max phase-to-phase, and 140kV BIL impulse withstand. Optional accessories allow visible external separation, bypass, isolation, dead-ending, grounding, and testing, as well as adding taps.

How to Install K656SR and M656SR Straight Receptacles

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for installing K656SR and M656SR Straight Receptacles, which offer an in-line cable connection to standard ANSI-386 600 amp 15kV, 25kV, or 35kV bushings.

Estimated time: 1h 30m

Tools needed:

5/8-11 tap, Hex wrench, Torque wrench (with 15/16 socket), Wire strippers, Brush (for aluminum cable wire), Suitable crimping tool

Supplies needed:

Receptacle housing, Bushing adapter, Cable adapter, Aluminum holding collar, Hex head bolt, Hose clamp (35kV only), Crimp connector, Belleville washer, Flat washer, Nylon venting rod, Lubricant (supplied or ELASTIMOLD approved), Brass bolt, Bushing converter contact, Loctite, Tape marker, No. 14 AWG copper wire (or equivalent), Suitable connector (for neutral and grounding wires)

  1. Prepare the Apparatus Bushing

DANGER: Ensure all apparatus is de-energized before beginning installation. If a stud is present in the apparatus bushing, remove it and re-tap the hole using a 5/8-11 tap. Clean and lubricate the apparatus bushing and bushing converter interface. Assemble the bushing converter onto the apparatus bushing. Apply 3-4 drops of Loctite to the threads of the brass bolt. Assemble the contact adapter to the apparatus bushing, with the bolt hole facing out, using the 5/8” brass bolt. Torque to 60 ft.-lbs.

  2. Prepare the Cable End

Train the cable end and straighten it into its final position. Cut the cable squarely to ensure maximum available length for crimp growth. If applicable, unwrap the concentric neutral wires a distance of 30” (76cm), do not cut them, and bend/fold them back out of the way. Wipe the outer jacket clean for a distance of 38” (96.5cm) or up to the concentric neutral wires.

  3. Slide Receptacle Housing and Prepare Cable Insulation

Slide the receptacle housing onto the cable a distance of 30” (76cm). Remove the semi-con shield and install a tape marker to the dimensions of 10-1/4” (26.04cm) and 11-1/4” (28.58cm) as shown in the documentation. Do not cut or nick the cable insulation. Bevel the end of the cable insulation at a 45-degree angle, approximately 1/4” (6mm) back. Thoroughly clean and then lubricate the cable insulation, always working toward the semi-con shield.

  4. Install Cable Adapter and Prepare Conductor

Install the cable adapter, small end first, until it is flush with the edge of the tape marker. Remove the protruding cable insulation by cutting it even with the end of the cable adapter. Do not cut or nick the cable adapter or the conductor. Verify that the length of the exposed conductor is 4 3/4” – 5” (12.06cm–12.7cm); if not, redo the assembly.

  5. Position Holding Collar and Crimp Connector

Position the holding collar over the conductor and flush against the cable adapter. Using the supplied hex wrench, tighten the setscrew. Remove the protective cap from the crimp connector. If using aluminum cable wire, brush the conductor and immediately insert it into the crimp connector, ensuring it is fully inserted into the crimp barrel. Measure the distance from the end of the connector to the holding collar; if it is over 7” (17.8cm), do not proceed and redo all previous work.

  6. Confirm Orientation and Crimp Connectors

Confirm that components are oriented in the order: Receptacle Housing, Cable Adapter, Crimp Connector, Contact Adapter. Confirm that the bolt hole in the crimp connectors is aligned with the bolt hole in the contact adapter. Crimp the connectors following the instructions packaged with them, rotating each crimp 90 degrees. After crimping, measure the distance from the end of the connector to the holding collar; if it is over 7” (17.8cm), do not proceed and redo all previous work.

  7. Assemble Washers and Bolt

Assemble the washers and bolt in the following order: Flat washer against the spade contact, Belleville washer (concave side down), then the hex-head bolt. Hand tighten the assembly. Using a torque wrench with a 15/16 socket, tighten to 50-60 ft.-lbs. Do not attempt to move or reposition any part of the assembly after the bolts are tightened.

  8. Lubricate and Seat Receptacle Housing

Apply the supplied lubricant or ELASTIMOLD approved lubricant generously to the outside of the cable adapter and the area of the bushing adapter. DO NOT SUBSTITUTE other lubricants, as they may be harmful. Slide the receptacle housing over the cable adapter and up to the edge of the interface. Insert the supplied nylon venting rod. Slide the receptacle housing onto the bushing converter until fully seated. Remove the venting rod.

  9. Ground the Receptacle Housing

Connect a short piece of No. 14 AWG copper wire (or equivalent) to the grounding eye of the receptacle housing. Make a small loop and twist tightly, taking care not to damage the eye. Gather together the concentric neutral wires. Using a suitable connector, connect the neutral wires and the grounding wire.

  10. Secure Hose Clamp (35kV Only)

FOR 35kV ONLY: Position the hose clamp between the locator bumps on the receptacle housing. Tighten the clamp until an audible click is heard.
