How to Install the 376LR Loadbreak Elbow Connector

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe installation and initial setup of the 376LR Loadbreak Elbow Connector on UD cable, including cable preparation, assembly, and connection to a bushing.

Estimated time: 1h 30m

Tools needed:

Probe wrench, Crimp tool, Wire brush, Wire strippers, Cutting tool, Hotstick

Supplies needed:

Elbow connector housing, Compression lug, Probe, Lubricant (Do Not Substitute), No. 14 AWG (2.5mm) copper wire, Grounding connector

  1. Prepare for Installation and Inspect Components

Ensure all apparatus is de-energized before beginning installation. This product must be installed only by competent personnel trained in high voltage electrical equipment safety practices. Check the package contents for completeness and damage. Verify all components fit properly with the cable and mating products. Thread the probe into the compression lug to check for resistance; replace damaged components if resistance is encountered. Gather all required tools and maintain cleanliness throughout the procedure.

  2. Train and Prepare Cable End

Train the UD cable to ease operation, ensuring a minimum of 20 inches extends beyond the end of the cable pad mount transformer. Cut excess cable squarely at the center line of the bushing. Unwrap and bind concentric neutral wires 8-1/2 inches back from the cable end. Remove the shield and insulation from the cable end, cutting squarely and carefully to avoid nicking the conductor. Remove the insulation shield and bevel the insulation end a maximum of 1/8 inch. Thoroughly clean the insulation to remove all traces of conductive residue.

  3. Install and Crimp Compression Lug

Wire brush bare aluminum conductors and immediately install the compression lug, rotating to spread inhibitor. Position the compression lug so its contact threaded hole aligns with the bushing bore. Crimp the lug according to the crimp chart packaged with the lug, starting at the crimp line mark and rotating 180 degrees for each successive crimp. Carefully wipe any excessive inhibitor from the outside of the lug and cable.

  4. Assemble the Elbow Connector

Lubricate the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing with the supplied lubricant; do not substitute. Keep insulation clean of dirt and grime. Slide the elbow connector onto the cable with a back and forth twisting motion. Wipe off all excess grease. Align the elbow with the compression lug’s threaded hole. Thread the probe into the lug by hand, taking care not to cross-thread. The probe must turn freely for approximately four turns before becoming snug. Tighten the probe with a wrench until the wrench bends.

  5. Connect Concentric Neutral Wires

Using a separate No. 14 AWG (2.5mm) copper wire or equivalent, insert one end through the grounding eye on the elbow. Twist it tight, taking care not to damage the eye. Twist all neutral wires together and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector. Provide adequate slack in the wires for elbow operation.

  6. Connect Elbow to Bushing Plug

Lubricate the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing with the supplied lubricant ONLY if the transformer and elbow are known to be de-energized. Connect the elbow to the bushing plug using a full insulated hotstick type live-line tool. DO NOT OPERATE BY HAND. Apply sufficient force to engage the internal lock on the elbow connector and bushing interface.
