Overview

The ABB 167RLR-F-5220 Loadbreak Replacement Elbow Connector is a 15kV, 200 Amp rated elbow designed for medium-voltage cable repair and replacement in underground distribution systems. The bi-metal contact ensures reliable electrical continuity and corrosion resistance, while the extended housing accommodates cable insulation diameters from 0.640 inch to 0.820 inch. Designed for compressed stranded #2 or solid #1 conductors (33.62 mm²), this elbow is ideal for applications requiring loadbreak operations, such as utility substations, switchgear, and pad-mounted transformers. The 200 Amp rating supports high-current circuits, and the loadbreak design allows for safe connection and disconnection under load conditions. Compatible with industry-standard 15kV class equipment, this replacement elbow minimizes downtime during maintenance or fault repairs. Key features include dead-front construction for insulation and shielding, eliminating exposure to live components. The specially formulated, non-rigid ethylene propylene diene monomer (EPDM) rubber construction allows for expansion and controlled gas release. An optional built-in capacitive test point enables voltage testing without disconnecting the circuit. The robust stainless steel pulling eye ensures safer, more durable hot-stick control. This elbow saves time and money by eliminating the need for splicing or installing new cable in retrofit installations, addressing varying bushing heights and incorrect cable terminations. IEEE 386 compliant and ANSI certified, the 167RLR-F-5220 is assembled in Albuquerque, New Mexico, USA, and meets Rural Utilities Service (RUS) acceptance criteria.

How to Install 167RLR/168RLR Loadbreak Replacement Elbow Connectors

This guide provides detailed instructions for the safe installation and initial connection of Elastimold 167RLR and 168RLR Loadbreak Replacement Elbow Connectors, converting livefront terminations to deadfront for UD cables.

Estimated time: 1h 30m

Tools needed:

Wire strippers, Crimping tool, Wire brush, Hotstick

Supplies needed:

Replacement Elbow Connector Housing, Compression Lug, Probe, Probe Wrench, Lubricant (Do Not Substitute), Hose Clamp, Separate copper wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm) or equivalent, Appropriate connector for ground

  1. Perform Initial Checks and Ensure Safety

DANGER: All apparatus must be de-energized during installation or removal of part(s). This product should be installed only by competent personnel trained in good safety practices involving high voltage electrical equipment. Check the contents of the package to ensure they are complete and undamaged. Verify all components for proper fit with the cable and/or mating products. Check threads by threading the probe into the compression lug; if resistance is encountered, check for damage and replace the component. Have all required tools at hand and maintain cleanliness throughout the procedure.

  2. Remove Existing Livefront Termination

DANGER: All apparatus must be de-energized during installation or removal of part(s). Remove the rubber cap from the terminator. Cut off the connector at the top of the terminator. Disconnect the ground lead from the base of the terminator. Finally, remove the terminator housing from the cable.

  3. Prepare the Cable

Train the cable to be straight and in-line with the bushing centerline. Cut the cable to measure 10-1/2 inches from the bushing centerline. Check the distance from the end of the cut cable to the insulation shield. If the insulation shield measures less than 6-1/2 inches, proceed to the next step (insulation shield will be cut in Step 4). If it is greater than 6-1/2 inches, consult your nearest ELASTIMOLD representative. Remove 1-3/8 inches of cable insulation from the end of the cable, cutting squarely. DO NOT NICK THE CONDUCTOR.

  4. Install the Compression Lug

Wire brush the bare aluminum conductor and immediately install the compression lug. Rotate the lug to spread the inhibitor. Position the compression lug so the contact threaded hole aligns with the bushing bore. Refer to the crimp chart packaged with the compression lug for recommended crimp information. Start crimping at the crimp line mark, rotating 180 degrees for each successive crimp. Carefully wipe excessive inhibitor from the outside of the lug and cable.

  5. Assemble the Elbow Connector

Lubricate the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing with the lubricant supplied. DO NOT SUBSTITUTE other lubricants, as they may be harmful. Keep the insulation clean of dirt and grime. Do not use excess grease and do not introduce any grease into the gap between the lug and the insulation. Slide the elbow connector onto the cable with a back and forth twisting motion. Wipe off all excess grease. Align the elbow with the compression lug's threaded hole. Thread the probe into the lug by hand, taking care not to cross-thread. The probe must turn freely for approximately four turns before becoming snug. Tighten with the wrench until the wrench bends.

  6. Connect the Concentric Neutral

Using a separate copper wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm) or equivalent, insert one end through the grounding eye on the elbow. Twist it tight, taking care not to damage the eye. Twist all neutral wires together and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector. Provide adequate slack in the wires for elbow operation. Add the hose clamp as shown in the documentation and tighten snugly. Do not overtighten.

  7. Connect the Elbow to the Bushing Plug

Lubricate the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing with the supplied lubricant. LUBRICATE ONLY IF THE TRANSFORMER AND ELBOW ARE KNOWN TO BE DE-ENERGIZED. DO NOT OPERATE BY HAND. Securely fasten a hotstick to the loadbreak connector pulling eye. Place the elbow connector receptacle area over the bushing plug, inserting the elbow male contact (arc follower portion) into the bushing until the first slight resistance is felt. Immediately push the elbow home with a fast, firm, straight motion to engage the internal lock on the elbow and bushing interface. Apply sufficient force to engage the internal lock.

  8. Perform Voltage Test (168RLR Only)

For 168RLR connectors, remove the test point cap with a hotstick, peeling it off at an angle rather than pulling directly in line. WARNING: The voltage test point is a capacitance device and is not directly connected to the conductor. Do not use conventional voltage measuring equipment. Follow the manufacturer’s directions for the meter used. Test with a suitable sensing device, made for use with separable connectors manufactured with capacitive test points, to determine if the cable is energized. Contamination, moisture, dirt, or use of the wrong measuring equipment can provide a false 'no voltage' indication. Treat the elbow as energized until the 'no voltage' test point indication is confirmed by other means. After voltage detection, clean and lubricate the inside surface of the cap with silicone grease and replace it on the test point.
