How to Install the 167LRT Loadbreak Bushing Tap
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe and proper installation of the 167LRT Loadbreak Bushing Tap, including cable preparation, assembly, and grounding.
Estimated time: 1h
Tools needed:
Wrenches, Installation Tool, Crimp tool, Wire brush
Supplies needed:
Compression Lug, Socket Contact, Lubricant (Do Not Substitute), Well Contact, No. 14 AWG (2.5mm) copper wire or equivalent, Appropriate connector (for grounding), Insulated cap or elbow (for mating product)
- Perform Initial Safety and Component Checks
DANGER: Ensure all apparatus is de-energized before beginning installation. This product should only be installed by competent personnel trained in high voltage electrical equipment. Inspect all package contents for completeness and damage. Verify all components are compatible with the cable and mating products. Read these instructions fully before starting and have all required tools ready, maintaining cleanliness throughout the procedure.
- Prepare and Train the Cable
Train the UD cable as shown in the diagram to ease future operation, ensuring at least 20 inches beyond the end of the cable pad mount transformer. Cut the excess cable squarely at the center line of the bushing. Unwrap and bind the concentric neutral wires 8-1/2 inches back from the cable end. Remove the semi-con shield and insulation from the cable end, cutting squarely without nicking the conductor. Wire brush bare aluminum conductors and immediately install the compression lug, rotating to spread inhibitor. Position the lug so its threaded hole aligns with the bushing bore. Crimp the lug according to the crimp chart, starting at the crimp line mark and rotating 180 degrees for each successive crimp. Carefully wipe excessive inhibitor from the lug and cable. Bevel the insulation end a maximum of 1/8 inch and thoroughly clean the insulation to remove all traces of conductive residue.
- Assemble the Bushing Well Contact
Thread the well contact onto the bushing well stud by hand, taking care not to cross-thread. Use the supplied wrench to tighten the well contact until the wrench bends, signifying proper torque.
- Assemble the Bushing Tap Housing to the Cable
Remove the protective cap from the bushing tap and retrieve the socket contact stored inside the housing. Lubricate the cable insulation and the inside of the bushing housing with the supplied lubricant; DO NOT SUBSTITUTE. Other lubricants may be harmful. Keep insulation clean and avoid introducing excess grease into the gap between the lug and insulation. Slide the bushing tap onto the cable using a back-and-forth twisting motion, then wipe off all excess grease. Align the bushing with the compression lug hole and assemble the socket contact into the bushing tap, ensuring the socket contact stud passes through the lug hole.
- Mount and Secure the Bushing Tap
Inspect the apparatus bushing well to ensure it is dry and free from contaminants. Lubricate the bushing well interface area of the bushing tap with the supplied or ELASTIMOLD approved lubricant. Place the lubricated bushing tap into the apparatus bushing well. Insert the installation tool into the bore of the bushing tap until it is fully seated. Insert a wrench through the wrench hole of the tool and turn clockwise until the wrench bends, indicating the proper assembly torque has been reached. Remove the wrench and installation tool from the bushing tap, ensuring the tool is clean before insertion.
- Connect the Concentric Neutral
Insert one end of a No. 14 AWG (2.5mm) copper wire or equivalent through the grounding eye on the bushing tap. Twist the wire tight, taking care not to damage the eye. Twist the neutral wires together and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector.
- Lubricate Interface and Install Mating Product
Thoroughly wipe the bushing tap interface clean of any contaminants. Apply a light, uniform coat of the supplied lubricant, working it thoroughly into the surface. CAUTION: Excess lubricant may prevent a loadbreak elbow from being fully seated in the 'locked on' position. Install the mating products (e.g., loadbreak elbow, insulated cap, or grounding elbow) to the bushing tap following their specific instructions. If a mating product is not immediately installed, replace the shipping cap. Do not energize or submerge the apparatus with only the shipping cap, as it is not insulated or watertight.
