How to Install the 151SR/K151SR Straight Receptacle

This guide provides detailed instructions for installing the 151SR/K151SR Straight Receptacle, designed to connect solid dielectric type cables to other ELASTIMOLD products. It covers cable preparation, crimping, lubrication, and grounding procedures for 15kV and 25kV class systems.

Tools needed:

Wire brush, Approved solvent, Rag, Crimp tool, Cable cutting tool, Wire strippers, Silicone grease

Supplies needed:

151SR/K151SR Straight Receptacle, Conductor Contact (male), Nylon Venting Rod, Lubricant (supplied with product), Crimp Chart, Solid dielectric type cable, Elastimold bail, Copper wire (#14 AWG or equivalent), Elastimold Insulating Plug (K150DP) (optional), Mating plug (e.g., 151SP/K151SP)

  1. Prepare Cable Jacket

De-energize all apparatus before beginning installation. For jacketed concentric neutral cable, cut and remove the cable jacket 8 inches from the cable end, ensuring sufficient concentric neutral wires for grounding. For copper tape shield cable, cut and remove the cable jacket 7 1/2 inches from the cable end, then remove the copper tape shield 6 1/2 inches from the cable end. Follow specific instructions for ECS or MA grounding devices if applicable.

  2. Prepare Conductor

Remove 7/8 to 1 inch of cable insulation and conductive shield. For #1 stranded/compressed and #1/0 compressed/solid aluminum cable, remove 1 3/4 to 1 7/8 inches. Cut squarely, do not pencil. Wire brush bare aluminum conductors and immediately insert into the crimp barrel containing inhibitor.

  3. Crimp Conductor Contact

Crimp the socket terminal onto the bared conductor, ensuring the conductor remains fully seated. Refer to the crimp chart for specific instructions. Start crimps at the imprinted crimp line and rotate each successive crimp or indent 90 degrees. If using aluminum cable, carefully wipe excess inhibitor from the contact and cable insulation.

  4. Clean and Pencil Insulation

Remove the semi-conductive shield 7 9/16 to 7 5/8 inches back from the end of the pin with a straight, smooth, squared cut, ensuring not to cut or nick the insulation. Pencil the insulation 1/8 inch. Clean the outer jacket and thoroughly clean the insulation with an approved solvent to remove all traces of semi-conducting residue, wiping from the cable end toward the outer jacket. Install an ECS or MA grounding device if applicable.

  5. Lubricate Receptacle and Cable

Remove the protective cap from the straight receptacle, keeping the cable insulation and receptacle clean. Apply the supplied lubricant sparingly to the cable as shown in the diagram and to the inside of the housing. Do not substitute lubricants, as others may be harmful to the product.

  6. Insert Cable into Receptacle

Push the cable into the housing until the base of the pin chamfer is flush with the inside face of the receptacle. If the receptacle is not to be immediately connected, replace it with an appropriate HV insulated cap (e.g., Elastimold Insulating Plug K150DP) as the shipping cover only offers dirt protection and is not an insulating device.

  7. Connect to Mating Plug

Lubricate the nose of the mating plug with silicone grease. Place the nylon rod into the receptacle face until it bottoms (approximately 1 3/4 inches), taking care not to cut the rod. Insert the plug assembly into the receptacle as far as possible. Pull out the nylon rod. Secure the electrical connection with an Elastimold bail. A bailing arrangement is required when this product is used with any mating Elastimold deadbreak product.

  8. Ground the Cable

If an ELASTIMOLD grounding device is not being used, connect a length of customer-supplied #14 AWG (or equivalent) copper wire through the grounding tab and twist tightly. Connect the grounding assembly of the connector to the system ground by merging it with the cable shield of each cable. Seal the grounding wires and connections to prevent corrosion.
