How to Install the 375LR/376LR Loadbreak Elbow Connector

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe installation and initial connection of Elastimold 375LR (without test point) and 376LR (with test point) Loadbreak Elbow Connectors to UD cable and 35kV class bushings.

Estimated time: 1h 30m

Tools needed:

Probe Wrench, Wire brush, Crimp tool, Hotstick, Suitable sensing device, Wire strippers, Utility knife

Supplies needed:

Elbow Connector Housing, Compression Lug, Probe, Lubricant (Do Not Substitute), No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm copper wire, Appropriate connector for neutral wires, Test Point Cap (for 376LR), HV insulated cap(s) or connector(s)

  1. Inspect Package Contents and Components

Check the contents of the package to ensure all parts are complete and undamaged. Verify all components fit properly with the cable and/or mating products.

  2. Check Probe Thread Fit

Thread the probe into the compression lug by hand. If resistance is encountered before full assembly, inspect for damage and replace any faulty components.

  3. Train Cable

Train the cable as shown in the diagram (20 inches minimum beyond the end of the cable pad mount transformer) to ease future operation. Cut excess cable squarely at the center line of the bushing.

  4. Prepare Concentric Neutral Wires

Unwrap and bind the concentric neutral wires 8-1/2 inches back from the end of the cable.

  5. Remove Shield and Insulation

Remove the shield and insulation from the cable end, cutting squarely. Take extreme care not to nick the conductor during this process.

  6. Install Compression Lug

Wire brush bare aluminum conductors immediately. Install the compression lug, rotating it to spread inhibitor. Position the lug so the contact threaded hole aligns with the bushing bore. Crimp the lug according to the crimp chart, starting at the crimp line mark and rotating 180 degrees for each successive crimp. Carefully wipe off any excessive inhibitor.

  7. Remove Insulation Shield and Clean

Remove the insulation shield as shown in the cable cut-back template (6-7/8 inches from the end of the cable). Bevel the insulation end a maximum of 1/8 inch. Thoroughly clean the insulation to remove all traces of conductive residue.

  8. Lubricate and Slide Elbow Housing

Lubricate the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing with the supplied lubricant ONLY. Do not substitute. Slide the elbow connector onto the cable using a back-and-forth twisting motion. Wipe off all excess grease.

  9. Align Elbow and Thread Probe

Align the elbow with the compression lug's threaded hole. Thread the probe into the lug by hand, ensuring not to cross-thread. The probe must turn freely for approximately four turns before becoming snug. Tighten with the probe wrench until the wrench bends.

  10. Connect Grounding Wire to Elbow

Using a separate No. 14 AWG (2.5mm) copper wire or equivalent, insert one end through the grounding eye on the elbow. Twist it tightly, taking care not to damage the eye.

  11. Connect Neutral Wires to Ground

Twist all neutral wires together and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector. Provide adequate slack in the wires to allow for elbow operation.

  12. Lubricate Bushing and Elbow Receptacle

Lubricate the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing with the supplied lubricant. ONLY LUBRICATE IF THE TRANSFORMER AND ELBOW ARE KNOWN TO BE DE-ENERGIZED.

  13. Prepare Bushing for Connection

Remove the insulated cap from the bushing by attaching a hotstick tool to the insulated cap pulling eye and following the accessory's instructions. Ensure the area is clear of obstructions.

  14. Connect Elbow to Bushing

Securely fasten a hotstick to the loadbreak connector pulling eye. After establishing firm footing and positive control, insert the probe tip approximately 2 inches into the bushing. Immediately push the elbow home with a fast, firm, straight motion, applying sufficient force to engage the internal lock on the elbow connector and bushing interface. Do not hold in the partially inserted position.

  15. Perform Voltage Test (376LR Only)

For 376LR models, remove the test point cap with a hotstick, peeling it off at an angle. Use a suitable sensing device, designed for capacitive test points, to determine if the cable is energized. Do not use conventional voltage measuring equipment. Treat the elbow as energized until confirmed otherwise by other means. After testing, clean and lubricate the cap with silicone grease and replace it.
