How to Install 375LR/376LR Loadbreak Elbow Connectors

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe and proper installation of Elastimold 375LR and 376LR Loadbreak Elbow Connectors, including cable preparation, elbow assembly, and neutral connection.

Estimated time: 1h

Tools needed:

Wire brush, Crimp tool, Probe wrench, Wire strippers, Utility knife, Hotstick (for voltage test and operation), Suitable sensing device (for voltage test)

Supplies needed:

Elbow Connector Housing, Compression Lug, Probe, Lubricant (Do Not Substitute), No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm copper wire (or equivalent), Appropriate connector for neutral wires, HV insulated cap(s) or connector(s) (if replacing shipping covers), Silicone grease (for test point cap)

  1. Prepare for Installation and Ensure Safety

De-energize all apparatus before starting installation or removal of parts, except for test point caps and indicators. Verify that all package contents are complete and undamaged. Inspect all components for proper fit with the cable and/or mating products. Check the probe threads by threading the probe into the compression lug; replace damaged components if resistance is encountered. Ensure all required tools are at hand and maintain cleanliness throughout the procedure. Confirm that installation is performed only by competent personnel trained in high voltage electrical equipment safety practices. If supplied with protective shipping covers, remove them and replace with appropriate HV insulated caps or connectors before submerging or energizing the circuit.

  2. Train and Prepare the Cable

Train the cable as shown in the diagram, ensuring a minimum of 20 inches beyond the end of the cable pad mount transformer for ease of operation. Cut any excess cable squarely at the center line of the bushing. Unwrap and bind the concentric neutral wires 8-1/2 inches back from the end of the cable. Remove the insulation shield (6-7/8 inches) and insulation (2-1/8 inches) from the cable end, cutting squarely and taking care not to nick the conductor. Wire brush the bare aluminum conductors and immediately install the compression lug, rotating it to spread the inhibitor. Position the compression lug so its contact threaded hole aligns with the bushing bore. Crimp the lug according to the crimp chart, starting at the crimp line mark and rotating 180 degrees for each successive crimp. Carefully wipe any excessive inhibitor from the outside of the lug and cable. Remove the remaining insulation shield as shown in the diagram. Bevel the insulation end a maximum of 1/8 inch. Thoroughly clean the insulation to remove all traces of conductive residue.

  3. Assemble the Elbow Connector

Lubricate the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing with the supplied lubricant; DO NOT SUBSTITUTE other lubricants. Keep the insulation clean of dirt and grime. Slide the elbow connector onto the cable using a back and forth twisting motion. Wipe off all excess grease from the elbow and cable. Align the elbow with the compression lug’s threaded hole. Thread the probe into the lug by hand, ensuring not to cross-thread. The probe must turn freely for approximately four turns before becoming snug. Tighten the probe with the probe wrench until the wrench bends, indicating proper torque.

  4. Connect the Concentric Neutral

Insert one end of a separate No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm copper wire (or equivalent) through the grounding eye on the elbow. Twist the copper wire tightly, taking care not to damage the grounding eye. Twist all neutral wires together and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector. Provide adequate slack in the neutral wires to allow for elbow operation.

  5. Lubricate for Connection (Pre-Operation)

Lubricate the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing with the supplied lubricant. WARNING: Only lubricate if the transformer and elbow are known to be de-energized.

  6. Perform Voltage Test (376LR Only)

WARNING: This step is for the 376LR model only. Treat the elbow as energized until the "no voltage" test point indication is confirmed by other means to prevent serious or fatal injury. Remove the test point cap with a hotstick, peeling it off at an angle rather than pulling directly in line with the assembly. Test with a suitable sensing device, made for use with separable connectors manufactured with capacitive test points, to determine if the cable is energized. Do not use conventional voltage measuring equipment. After voltage detection, clean and lubricate the inside surface of the cap with silicone grease and replace it tightly on the test point.
