How to Install 167RLR/168RLR Loadbreak Replacement Elbow Connectors
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe installation and initial setup of Elastimold 167RLR and 168RLR loadbreak replacement elbow connectors, converting livefront terminations to deadfront for UD cables.
Estimated time: 1h 30m
Tools needed:
Probe wrench, Wire brush, Crimping tool, Wire strippers, Measuring tape or ruler, Hotstick
Supplies needed:
Replacement Elbow Connector Housing, Compression Lug, Probe, Lubricant (supplied, do not substitute), Hose Clamp, Copper wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm or equivalent), Appropriate connector (for neutral to ground)
- Perform Pre-Installation Checks and De-energize Apparatus
DANGER: Ensure all apparatus is de-energized before beginning installation or removal of any parts. Check the package contents for completeness and damage. Verify all components fit properly with the cable and mating products. Thread the probe into the compression lug to check for resistance; replace damaged components if resistance is encountered. Have all required tools at hand and maintain cleanliness throughout the procedure.
- Remove Existing Livefront Termination
Remove the rubber cap from the terminator. Cut off the existing connector at the top of the terminator. Disconnect the ground lead from the base of the terminator. Carefully remove the terminator housing from the cable.
- Prepare the Cable End
Train the cable to be straight and in-line with the bushing centerline. Measure and cut the cable to 10-1/2 inches from the bushing centerline. If the insulation shield measures less than 6-1/2 inches from the end of the cut cable, proceed. If greater, consult an ELASTIMOLD representative. Remove 1-3/8 inches of cable insulation from the end, cutting squarely. DO NOT NICK THE CONDUCTOR during this process.
- Install the Compression Lug
Wire brush the bare aluminum conductor thoroughly and immediately install the compression lug. Rotate the lug to spread the inhibitor. Position the compression lug so its contact threaded hole aligns with the bushing bore. Refer to the crimp chart provided with the compression lug for recommended crimp information. Start crimping at the crimp line mark, rotating 180 degrees for each successive crimp. Carefully wipe any excessive inhibitor from the outside of the lug and cable.
- Assemble the Elbow Housing
Lubricate the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing with the supplied lubricant. DO NOT SUBSTITUTE other lubricants as they may be harmful. Keep the insulation clean of dirt and grime. Do not use excess grease or introduce any grease into the gap between the lug and the insulation. Slide the elbow connector onto the cable using a back and forth twisting motion. Wipe off all excess grease. Align the elbow with the compression lug’s threaded hole. Thread the probe into the lug by hand, ensuring not to cross-thread. The probe should turn freely for approximately four turns before becoming snug. Tighten the probe with the probe wrench until the wrench bends.
- Connect the Concentric Neutral
Using a separate copper wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm or equivalent), insert one end through the grounding eye on the elbow. Twist it tight, taking care not to damage the eye. Twist all neutral wires together and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector. Ensure adequate slack in the wires for elbow operation. Add the supplied hose clamp as shown in the diagram and tighten it snugly. Do not overtighten the hose clamp.
- Connect the Elbow to the Bushing Plug
Lubricate the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing with the supplied lubricant. LUBRICATE ONLY IF THE TRANSFORMER AND ELBOW ARE KNOWN TO BE DE-ENERGIZED. DO NOT OPERATE BY HAND. Securely fasten a hotstick to the loadbreak connector pulling eye. After establishing firm footing and positive control, place the elbow connector receptacle area over the bushing plug, inserting the elbow male contact into the bushing until the first slight resistance is felt. Immediately push the elbow home with a fast, firm, straight motion to engage the internal lock on the elbow and bushing interface. Apply sufficient force to ensure the internal lock engages.
- Perform Voltage Test (168RLR Only)
If installing a 168RLR with a test point, you can use it to establish if the circuit is energized. Remove the test point cap with a hotstick, peeling it off at an angle. WARNING: The voltage test point is a capacitance device, not directly connected to the conductor. Do not use conventional voltage measuring equipment; follow the manufacturer’s directions for the specific sensing device. Treat the elbow as energized until the 'no voltage' indication is confirmed by other means. After testing, clean and lubricate the inside surface of the cap with silicone grease and replace it tightly on the test point.
