How to Install 273ELR/274ELR Loadbreak Elbow Connectors

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the new installation and total replacement of 273ELR (without test point) and 274ELR (with test point) Loadbreak Elbow Connectors, including cable preparation, assembly, and connection procedures.

Estimated time: 1h 30m

Tools needed:

Pin wrench, Wire brush, Crimp tool, Hotstick, Suitable voltage sensing device (for 274ELR)

Supplies needed:

Elbow Connector Housing, Compression Lug, Probe, Probe Wrench, Lubricant (Do Not Substitute), Copper wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm), Appropriate ground connector, Silicone grease (for 274ELR test point cap)

  1. Perform Initial Safety Checks and Prepare Components

DANGER: Ensure all apparatus is de-energized before starting installation or removal of parts, except for test point caps and indicators that can be installed and operated energized. Inspect all package contents for completeness and damage. Verify all components fit properly with the cable and mating products. Check compression lug threads by hand-threading the probe; replace if resistance is encountered prior to full assembly. Gather all required tools and maintain a clean work area.

  2. Train and Prepare the Cable

Train the cable to allow for ease of operation, ensuring a minimum of 20 inches extends beyond the end of the cable pad mount transformer. Cut any excess cable squarely at the center line of the bushing. Unwrap and bind the concentric neutral wires 'X' inches back from the cable end (e.g., 13 inches for 02200XXX, 02500XXX, 02509XXX). Carefully remove the insulation shield and insulation from the cable end, cutting squarely and taking care not to nick the conductor. Wire brush the bare aluminum conductors thoroughly and immediately install the compression lug. Rotate the lug to spread the inhibitor and ensure the contact threaded hole aligns with the bushing bore. Crimp the lug according to the manufacturer's chart, starting at the crimp line mark and rotating 180 degrees for each successive crimp. Wipe off any excessive inhibitor. Remove the remaining insulation shield as shown in the diagram and bevel the insulation end a maximum of 1/8 inch. Thoroughly clean the insulation to remove all traces of conductive residue.

  3. Assemble the Elbow Connector

Lubricate the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing using only the supplied lubricant; DO NOT SUBSTITUTE. Other lubricants may be harmful to this product or its mating product(s). Keep the insulation free of dirt and grime. Slide the elbow connector onto the cable using a back-and-forth twisting motion. Wipe off any excess grease. Align the elbow with the compression lug's threaded hole. Thread the probe into the lug by hand, being careful not to cross-thread. The probe must turn freely for approximately four turns before becoming snug. Tighten the probe with the supplied wrench until the wrench bends, indicating proper torque.

  4. Connect the Concentric Neutral Wires

Insert one end of a separate copper wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm or equivalent) through the grounding eye on the elbow. Twist it tightly, ensuring not to damage the eye. Twist all concentric neutral wires together with the copper wire from the grounding eye. Connect this twisted bundle to ground using an appropriate connector, providing adequate slack in the wires to allow for elbow operation.

  5. Connect the Elbow to the Bushing Plug

CAUTION: Lubricate the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing ONLY if it is confirmed that both the transformer and elbow are de-energized. Securely fasten a hotstick to the loadbreak connector pulling eye. Place the elbow connector receptacle area over the bushing plug, inserting the elbow male contact (arc follower portion) into the bushing until slight resistance is felt (when the arc follower meets the female contact). DO NOT HOLD IN THIS POSITION BUT IMMEDIATELY push the elbow home with a fast, firm, straight motion to engage the internal lock on the elbow and bushing interface. Apply sufficient force to ensure the internal lock engages.

  6. Perform Voltage Test (274ELR only)

DANGER: The voltage test point is a capacitance device; it is not directly connected to the conductor. Do not use conventional voltage measuring equipment. Follow the manufacturer’s directions for the meter that is used. Test with a suitable sensing device, made for use with separable connectors manufactured with capacitive test points, to determine if the cable is energized. Contamination, moisture, dirt, etc. around the test point or use of the wrong measuring equipment can provide a false “no voltage” indication on an energized elbow. To prevent serious or fatal injury, treat the elbow as energized until the “no voltage” test point indication is confirmed by other means. If using a 274ELR with a test point, remove the test point cap with a hotstick, peeling it off at an angle rather than pulling directly. After voltage detection, clean and lubricate the inside surface of the test point cap with silicone grease and replace it securely on the test point.
