How is the voltage class visually indicated?
The color-coded PBT interface shield indicates voltage class: red for 15 kV, blue for 25 kV, and black for 35 kV.
Are these products compatible with existing systems?
Yes, they can be universally applied to all IEEE 386 compliant interfaces without costly cable rework or installing additional elbows in existing systems.
What are the benefits of the PBT interface shield?
It provides an excellent dielectric mating surface, visual voltage class indication, confirms full insertion, and prevents rubber-to-rubber sticking.

How to Install Elastimold 375LR/376LR Loadbreak Elbow Connectors
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe and proper installation, cable preparation, and connection of Elastimold 375LR and 376LR Loadbreak Elbow Connectors to UD cable and 35kV class bushings.
Estimated time: 1h 30m
Tools needed:
Probe wrench, Wire brush, Crimp tool, Hotstick (insulated live-line tool), Wire strippers, Suitable sensing device (for 376LR voltage test)
Supplies needed:
Elbow connector housing, Compression lug, Probe, Lubricant (supplied, do not substitute), Copper wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm), Appropriate connector (for grounding), HV insulated cap(s) or connector(s), Silicone grease
- Perform Pre-Installation Checks and Safety Precautions
Ensure all apparatus is de-energized before beginning installation or removal of parts, except for test point caps and indicators. Inspect all components (Elbow Connector Housing, Compression Lug, Probe) for damage, proper rating, and compatibility with the cable and mating products. Verify the probe threads freely into the compression lug for at least four turns. Read all instructions thoroughly and have all required tools and supplies ready. Remove any protective shipping covers and replace with appropriate HV insulated caps or connectors if submerging or energizing the circuit.
- Prepare the Cable
Train the cable to ease operation, ensuring at least 20 inches of excess cable beyond the end of the bushing pad. Cut the excess cable squarely at the bushing's center line. Unwrap and bind the concentric neutral wires 8-1/2 inches back from the cable end. Carefully remove the insulation shield and insulation from the cable end, ensuring not to nick the conductor. Wire brush the bare aluminum conductors and immediately install the compression lug, rotating it to spread the inhibitor. Align the lug's threaded hole with the bushing bore and crimp according to the supplied chart. Remove the insulation shield as shown in the template, beveling the insulation end a maximum of 1/8 inch. Thoroughly clean the insulation to remove all conductive residue.
- Assemble the Elbow Connector
Lubricate the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing with the supplied lubricant; do not substitute. Slide the elbow connector onto the cable using a back-and-forth twisting motion, then wipe off any excess grease. Align the elbow with the compression lug's threaded hole. Thread the probe into the lug by hand, ensuring it turns freely for approximately four turns before becoming snug. Tighten the probe with the probe wrench until the wrench bends.
- Connect the Concentric Neutral
Insert one end of a No. 14 AWG (2.5mm) copper wire through the grounding eye on the elbow and twist it tightly, taking care not to damage the eye. Twist all neutral wires together and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector. Ensure adequate slack in the wires to allow for elbow operation.
- Connect the Elbow to the Bushing
DANGER: Ensure the transformer and elbow are known to be de-energized before lubricating. Lubricate the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing with the supplied lubricant. Securely fasten a hotstick to the loadbreak connector pulling eye. Remove any insulated cap from the bushing using the hotstick. With firm footing and positive control, withdraw the elbow from the apparatus parking stand. Insert the probe tip approximately 2 inches into the bushing, then immediately push the elbow home with a fast, firm, straight motion, applying sufficient force to engage the internal lock.
- Perform Voltage Test (376LR Only)
If using a 376LR model, remove the test point cap with a hotstick, peeling it off at an angle. WARNING: The voltage test point is a capacitance device and not directly connected to the conductor. Do not use conventional voltage measuring equipment. Use a suitable sensing device designed for capacitive test points to determine if the cable is energized. Treat the elbow as energized until a 'no voltage' indication is confirmed by other means, as contamination or incorrect equipment can provide false readings. After testing, clean and lubricate the inside surface of the cap with silicone grease and replace it on the test point.
